Everyone from the due feb thread will know that I had been popping in and out of false labour since 36wks and was getting very bored of it. Friday 3rd I had my over due appt and was booked for induction the following tuesday, also had a sweep while I was there.
Came home having a few contractings which carried on all day, but having been doing that for weeks didn't get excited, then tried to go to bed at 10 at which point they suddenly started to hurt more and settled to 10mins apart. At 1ish I got dh to put my tens on for me as they were getting more painfull although I was still half expecting them to stop again but all of a sudden they were 3mins apart and hurt like hell.
Rang labour ward and they said to come in because I had c-sec last time s they wanted to keep an eye on me, so got here at about 3-30 to find I was 4cm. Contractions were coming thick and fast and by 7 was 7cm but then they dropped to 5mins apart so had waters broken to get things going again.
8am shift change, new dr came on duty and wanted me on monitor due to scar which I agreed to as I was still able to move around and use birthing ball etc. Contractions got slower Sad and kept stopping then cominfg in a burst, then stopping again, they said this was because baby was back to back and head wasn't low enough.
12pm still only 7cm even tho I had had lots of very painfull contractions most of which were going off the top of the chart on the monitor, wanted to cry at this point (ds1 labour was 6hrs in total and I had been told lots this would be quicker) Dr came back and said wanted to try drip to get me going again, also wanted to put in epidral because he said I couldn't be having proper painful contractions if I was coping with just tensAngry I pointed out that I had delivered a baby using just tens before but he wanted one in incase they needed to do a c-sec and said contractions on drip would be lots worse. It is a bad idea to tell a stroppy woman in labour that she can't do something and the midwife was very supportive so i refused the epidural as it really wasn't what I wanted.
Drip went on and I was told would be given 3hrs it was about 1pm by now. Contractions started up again and got regular then stopped so it seemed the same thing was happening with the drip as without it until dh pointed out that my arm was swelling and suggested that it wasn't going into a vein and that was why it was not working, eventually they listened to him and at 4 it was decided that the drip had failed and was going into tissue, dr was convinsed to let me try again with a drip that worked and the dreaded threat of another c-sec was pushed back 3hrs I had got to 8cm, 1cm in 9hrs is really depressing.
So 4pm new drip, new midwife and I was determined to have a baby before she went off duty!!
This worked and my contractions came back, although despite what he dr said not worse than the ones I had been having, he had made me determined to prove him wrong and I stuck with the tens.
6-15 I wanted to push but was still only 9cm also had membranes bulging which was odd as waters had been broken and so much had come out we thought I had a swimmimg pool inside meGrin so she broke waters again and everything went much faster. 5 or 6 pushes (1 cut and 2 internal tears ouch!)later at 6-45 I was holding my not so tiny baby boy Alfred William, or Alfie for short. He weighed 9lb15oz and is lovely.
Stitches weren't fun I won't go into the gory details but lets just say it isn't fun when they are stitching a bit with no local and just gas and air because they have used it all and hadn't realised that you have torn as well as been cut.
Anyway he was completely worth it all and is very good and very hungry Grin

Flamesparrow · 16/03/2006 13:56

They really need to stop muttering that rumour about second babies being faster don't they??? Gets the mother very bitter and frustrated when it turns out it doesn't work that way!!!

Yay for fighting them and getting what you wanted, and ARGH for the gas & air stitches... I was in enough pain on gas & air just for them to see what stitches I needed! Think I would have thumped them if they'd tried anything with a needle without decent drugs.

Hello everyone, this is my debut message so bear with me. Congrats and blessings on your family Helen38. I have a question if you don't mind. I have a 3 year old and am expecting baby no.2 in July. I am so anxious about the arrival and that my son will be ok. Any tips on making the transition smooth?
