For the past two years since Granddad died, you said you wanted to live to 90 and that would be it for you.

You were 90 on Christmas Eve, you smiled at the flowers we bought you and your great grandsons as they sang you happy birthday. You were very frail and poorly.

And this morning at 9.30am you passed away. You always did do what you said you would and it makes me smile that it was the last thing you did!

I hope you are now reunited with Grandad and Dad and you are alltogether again. It's been 10 years since Dad died, your youngest son and my Dad, you always said you should never see your children die and that it broke your heart for the rest of your life.

May you all be happy and enjoy whatever it is that comes next.

my granddad vowed he wasn't going to go until I'd taken my youngest DS to see him, and hung on really poorly for months until I was finally able to get down with DS3 to see him. He died contended very soon after that.

It's a strange feeling isn't it, sadness about them going, but at the same time I also found that small smile that, true to his word (And stubborn as well) he did what he said.

What strong people, and how well they used their last days and last strength. I am very moved.

I remember my grandad nursing my gran through 20 years of Parkinson's, and after she died he went touring Australia for 6 months visiting all the nephews and nieces he'd never seen.

A week after he came back I went to see him and he sat back in his chair and said "I've been waiting a long time to up and visit them all. I'm happy now".

He died a couple of nights later, sat in his chair, watching the TV, with a glass of whisky.

Way to go, grandad.
