I am trying to help a friend plan the funeral of her beautiful 6 month old daughter who has just died. It is to be a non religeous woodland burial, and we are looking for inspiration for nice music/poems/readings etc. Does anyone have any ideas??

I am so sorry for your friends loss.

This is a poem that i know a lot of parents have drawn comfort from.

was a life that hardly begun no time to find your place in the sun no time to do all you could have done but we loved you enough for a lifetime No time to enjoy the world and its wealth No time to take life down off the shelf no time to sing the song of yourself though you had enough love for a lifetime Those who live long endure sadness and tears but you'll never suffer the sorrowing years no betrayel, no anger no hatred, no fears Just love, only love in your lifetime..

Also do look at this thread...it may seem an odd thread to link to but there a re a lot of suggestions on here!

we had beautiful by joe cocker at my daughters funeral, because she was.

my thoughts are with you and your friend x

This is a very good book:

British Humanist Association funerals guide

At our daughter's funeral my DH read 'Guess How Much I Love You' and I read 'On Joy and Sorrow' from The Prophet, which sounds religious but isn't - more spiritual without referring to any specific belief, I think.

For music we had Tonight We Fly by the Divine Comedy and Dedicated to the One I Love by the Mamas and Papas. My two-year-old DS was up and dancing so we must have done something right.

There are some lovely readings from Winnie the Pooh suggested on the thread Lottie linked to.

Love and thoughts to you and your friend.

It might be a bit upbeat, but Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder.

Your poor friend.

stuffitllama · 22/03/2009 15:05

Not sure if it is too late, but here are four songs that I used, and have found very comforting since
Avril Lavigne - Keep holding on

RyanDan - The Face

Avril Lavinge -Slipped Away

Karen Taylor -Good Precious Child

melissa75 · 26/03/2009 10:43

Another is Angel by Sarah McLachlan (sp?)

licquorice, misposted the name of the Karen Taylor song, it is called Precious Child from her album called "Good"
Here are the lyrics
In my dreams, you are alive and well
Precious child, precious child
In my mind, I see you clear as a bell
Precious child, precious child
In my soul, there is a hole
That can never be filled
But in my heart, there is hope
'Cause you are with me still

In my heart, you live on
Always there never gone
Precious child, you left too soon
Tho' it may be true that we're apart
You will live forever... in my heart

In my plans, I was the first to leave
Precious child, precious child
But in this world, I was left here to grieve
Precious child, my precious child

In my soul, there is a hole
That can never be filled
But in my heart there is hope
And you are with me still

In my heart you live on
Always there, never gone
Precious child, you left too soon,
Tho' it may be true that we're apart
You will live forever... in my heart

God knows I want to hold you,
See you, touch you
And maybe there's a heaven
And someday I will again
Please know you are not forgotten until then

In my heart you live on
Always there never gone
Precious child, you left too soon
Tho' it may be true that we're apart
You will live forever... in my heart

This song has been used at some of the memorials I have been to at Baby Loss Awareness Month services which is October of each year. If your friend has not already done so, suggest she gets in touch with SANDS...they were a Godsend when I lost my twins, very supportive and helpful and have a lot of literature on planning a funeral for a child.

melissa75 · 26/03/2009 11:30

sorry, meant to add, the reason I say it was played at the memorials at yearly services, is because the memorial services are always non denominational, as you have mentioned your friend is doing a non religious service.

SJLTM · 26/03/2009 11:53

One song that really helped me after my miscarriage was fly by Celine Dion....So sorry for your friend.
