Who's the person with the 'sock puppet' analogy?

Cos I wanted to say thankyou!

Can't remember who it was? Though I should.

Someone I knew quite well died this morning (he was the Vice-Principal of the college I attend - a wee place with only about 250 students, and one of the best lecturers I have ever encountered.)

I was upset and the children asked why -- so I told them and used the sock example I had heard on Mumsnet and they all took it in their stride after that. In fact, dd2 (4) has gone to bed with a sock on her hand!!

So thankyou! It has really helped!

Think it was Twiglett, I've used it too.
I'm sorry for your loss.

It is a fantastic way to describe death to small children isn't it.

I used it earlier this year when my Dad died.

(I think it was either Twiglett or Franny BTW??)

What is the sock puppet analogy?

Here you are:

By Twiglett on Fri 21-Jul-06 20:48 I put a hand in a glove (well in a sock cos I couldn't find a glove)

I said to DS .. "this is you .. the glove is your body" (wiggling fingers all around), "but the hand is the bit that is really you and some people call that your soul or your spirit" (keep on wiggling)

"when you die your spirit goes on" (gently take hand out of glove and make it keep wiggling and swooping around .. tickling him works too as you gently lay the glove down on the ground)

Yes, thanks Twiglett.

My dd2 especially used to come from nursery to college for lunch before I took her home and she often ate with us and this lecturer, who was very sociable.

When I explained today, she said 'oh yes, the nice man who told funny stories at lunchtime" - and she said my wiggly fingers were 'all the funny stories going to heaven"

I feel a bit weird being upset by this, but he was truly an exceptional man I was honoured to know.
