Missed miscarriage- 12 weeks

hey,
at my 12 weeks scan my baby was measuring 12 weeks 2 days but I was told there was no heartbeat.
I have gone home to see if anything happens naturally, it’s only been a couple of days and all I am experiencing is mild cramps sporadically. I’m so nervous if it comes to a d and c because I have only been offered general anaesthetic which I don’t want. I have also been offered the medical if my body doesn’t naturally begin the process.

I just wondered has anyone else been this far along? Is there any advice or knowledge on what I am to expect and how long you waited?

emotionally I’m still in shock, I don’t think my brain or heart believe it yet which may be half the problem x

thank you

I’m so sorry for your loss, I understand how heartbreaking it is. There are a lot of wise mumsnetters who will have been through a similar experience and can advise.
My own experience was a loss at 11 weeks which started naturally but I still needed to have a part medical intervention. The natural part felt like labour and was incredibly painful for about a hour. The medical process was quick and painless. However the emotional recovery took a lot longer. I just couldn’t stop crying. Be gentle with yourself and explain any worries to the medical team, they are there to support.

@Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 thank you for your reply. Can I please ask when you say medical intervention you mean a d and c or the tablet? I have been offered both but have a complete phobia of general anaesthetic and I don’t think they will offer me local where I go although I know some hospitals do offer that. You say it happened naturally, was that after an initial wait? So sorry for the questions I really just feel a bit left in the dark about everything x

So sorry you're going through this ❤️ I've had a miscarriage at 12 weeks Which happened naturally the day after the scan.

My second miscarriage happened at 10 weeks and I opted for a general. They really looked after me and it was nice knowing it was "over". Whatever happens I wish you all the best - I have my rainbow baby now so there is hope on the other side xx

So sorry to hear that. One of my friend just had a miscarriage around 12 weeks. She waited for it pass naturally and after a few days of cramping she started to bleed. The tissue passed on its own

So sorry…I had GA and it was physically painless and over very quickly. Also, in case it gives you hope, I got pregnant immediately again after the management and it was a successful pregnancy. Wishing you all the best!

MamaH03 · 17/10/2025 19:51

@Cinai thank you for the insight and sorry for your loss. I’ve had general a before but since having children I just have a huge phobia of having it again. Thank you for the hope we can try in the future x

@mmkn thank you for your reply, I’m so sorry for your loss.
you said after a few days cramping the process started for you.. was this after an initial wait? It’s been 4 days and I’m just having slight cramping. X

@ThelastRolo20 thank you so much for your reply. I’m so sorry for your loss. My fear of general an is too much for me to be able to take that route I just hope it happens naturally within the next few days. I’m still having pregnancy symptoms as in tender breasts and some nausea x

I have no experience of miscarriage and I am so sorry for your loss 💔

but what I will say is a general anaesthetic is probably one of the times you are safest. You are closely watched by at least one highly trained medical professional who will be watching for even the smallest changes in your vitals. If anything should change (and if you’re fit and healthy and have had previous anaesthetics with no complications), you are in the safest hands possible in the best possible place.

I had 3 miscarriages. One I left to resolve naturally, and two I had a D&C for. The one I left naturally was the one that it took the longest for my fertility and cycle to settle back down to try again.

SomethingElse73 · 17/10/2025 20:09

I had two MMC - one picked up as 12 week scan and the following one a bit earlier as I went for a private scan at 8 weeks. In both cases I had a D&C, so not much use to you as I have no idea how long it would have taken if I’d let it pass naturally. Just wanted to say sorry, it sucks - I was totally floored by the first one as I didn’t even know MMC was a thing! But had a successful pg after those 2 losses and she’s now a wonderful 15yo xxx
