Family Chaos

So our parent has passed away recently, and oldest sibling has been named next of kin. Totally fine with that as oldest, parent didn't leave a will etc.

Other sibling has a long history of being a self serving theif who hasn't worked for 13 years, opportunistic etc.
I am keeping a close eye on how things are playing out, as oldest sibling seems to be struggling with getting organised and is clearly overwhelmed.

Ive had to step in as sibling who is trying to put on a show but doesn't have nay money to contribute has put themselves as next of kin on the bank account.

Am I being unreasonable in stating the obvious here? They are clearly trying to be slick, but I cannot be out manoeuvred here. My family are acting like I'm being unreasonable in vocing my concerns, but it's like let's be honest. They couldn't be bothered with parent in life but now acting like they'd bend over backwards to accommodate their death!

Are you in the uk?.

Is there now no surviving parent?. This has the potential to become a complete mess taking up much time and money to sort out

What family are acting unreasonable with you voicing your concerns?.

Dying intestate has its own set of rules to follow upon death and those must be adhered to. Bank accounts are usually frozen in such cases. I would seek your own legal advice asap on this matter also because knowledge is power.

Thanks for your response. Yes in the UK.
I know we will o to probate and luckily the bank is being very tight fisted. It's not so much as a mess, as it's one property we will have to sell, but in the meantime Im having to keep an eye out for self serving behaviours which isn't great. Taking things from the house etc. When nothing has even been discussed is my issue also.

I think you need a grant of administration on the case of intestacy rather than a grant of probate but you need your own legal advice here. The potential for all this becoming a huge mess is high if this if not dealt with properly. And nothing should be taken from the house.
