She was only 32 — Please help us push for earlier bowel cancer screening in memory of Cheryl (UK Petition)

Hi everyone,
I’m posting with a heavy heart and a plea for support.
My fiancée’s sister, Cheryl Reid, passed away recently from bowel cancer at just 32 years old. She was a loving daughter, sister, cousin, and girlfriend – full of life and taken far too soon.
Cheryl's diagnosis came too late, despite showing symptoms. Bowel cancer is still wrongly considered an “older person’s” disease, and by the time she was properly tested, it was already advanced. The heartbreaking truth is: if she had been diagnosed earlier, Cheryl might still be here.
We’ve created a petition calling for earlier testing and better awareness of bowel cancer in younger people. No family should go through what we have.
🔗 Please sign and share the petition here:
Lower bowel cancer screening age to 30 & funding for investigation of symptoms - Petitions
Whether you're a mum, sister, daughter, or just someone who cares – your signature could help protect others like Cheryl.
Thank you for reading and for any support you can give.

Oh gosh, how many times was she dismissed by the doctor ? 😥

HollieL92 · 09/07/2025 10:46

She had been presenting for a few years by this point on and off with different stomach issues and they put it down to Gastric issues, her bloods were not elevated for a while so they only scanned her when the bloods were out when realistically when she presented with persistent symptoms of bowel cancer she should have been scanned. She was even sent away when the Dr referred her for scans.

It's so sad. I'm sorry for your loss. All the work that Bowelbabe did still isn't getting through.

teksquad · 09/07/2025 10:52

Im very sorry to read this. My friend died at 44 with 3 young children from bowel cancer. She had private healthcare but they couldn't do anything by the time she had noticeable symptoms. There should be a better screening process for younger people. Have signed.

simsbustinoutmimi · 09/07/2025 10:56

I have signed but it would be great if this was written from the heart, rather than chatGPT

EveryKneeShallBow · 09/07/2025 10:59

Signed. I’m sorry for your loss.

HollieL92 · 09/07/2025 11:01

Thank you, and thats a good observation. It is from the heart as i put in most of the information. Also i would like to highlight that i have written about 7 different versions of this for other platforms and i am trying to gain awareness quickly and fast if you would like to head over to my tik tok i have done a few talking videos that i hope you find more heartfelt that this. I appreciate the signature <3

It's written in the same tone as tons of petitions (I don't see GPT hallmarks here - hyphens are often correct where commas and run-on sentences aren't) and claiming that that means she doesn't really mean it is absurd.

If I wrote something from the heart when my friend died, it would've been "fuccck this is so unfair, fucking life can be utter shit sometimes, how can this happen?"

When you want people to act you need to write in a certain, articulate way that succinctly explains what and why.

OP, I'm sorry for your loss.

The bold text at random points and the clip emoji.

NescafeAndIce · 09/07/2025 11:11

The bolding isn't at random, it emphasises the salient points.

I've had tons of donation and petition requests in this form for years.

But if anyone wants to argue that means people should only ask for action if their words are formatted a certain way, go ahead. I'm off to sign it.

You can input it into an AI detector online and look at the results.

Hi,

Again, thanks for highlighting this.

Are you happy? or is there some sort of different response that you are looking for because unfortunately you will not get that from me.

This is looking for support to make a positive change not dissect the wording and determine whether or not it is written (with help from myself on the content of it) from chat GPT or AI in general.

Some people are not good at articulating themselves.

Personally, I do not see your problem and if you would not mind your taking the attention away from the petition with your negativity.

I'm sorry for your loss.

It sounds like the issue here was not being sent by her GP for tests sooner - I would say that's the key learning point that needs addressing.

Unicorn34 · 09/07/2025 11:41

So sorry for your loss. It's heartbreaking. Ive signed and will share as far as I can.

Autumn1990 · 09/07/2025 11:48

I’m sorry for your loss
Ive signed the petition
I was bleeding from the bowel fairly heavily for over a year before I was sent for tests. It was put down to probable internal piles after child birth although no one could actually find the piles. It was also during covid. Thankfully we have a strong history of inflammatory bowel disease in our family and that’s what I’ve got. I was really lucky for the dice to have rolled on ulcerative colitis and not cancer as I’ve two small children.
If a FIT test was done when I first went to the doctors or every couple of years I think it would have been picked up sooner.

HollieL92 · 09/07/2025 11:51

Thanks so much for sharing. Even though it didnt land on cancer what a ride you have been on yourself! That still is scary and has life long effects. In terms of your FIT test - I did not even know these were a thing nor did Cheryl. I am surprised the Dr never made it known to cheryl either to perhaps consider it.

OP posts:
Autumn1990 · 09/07/2025 11:54

I believe if the patient doesn’t meet certain guidelines the lab won’t process the FIT test, a bit like smear tests at the wrong age or time

FellInAPotHole · 09/07/2025 11:55

Sorry for your loss. Much too young and unforgivable that she did not get taken seriously by doctors.

Is there a history of bowel cancer in the family? Do you know if she was tested for a genetic link? Your fiance may (or may not) want to have this information.

HollieL92 · 09/07/2025 11:56

Which is crazy as she had all symptoms. I just hope we can push for some change in one way or another.

OP posts:
HollieL92 · 09/07/2025 12:24

Hey,

Thanks for the message.

There is history of bowel issues more so in her fathers side of the family.

but this is more IBS/Collitis.

She was also not tested for a genetic link however, my partner went for a colonoscopy shortly after she passed and there was no cause for concern. His Dr referred to him.

OP posts:
Iamtarticus · 09/07/2025 12:27

What were her main symptoms?x

HollieL92 · 09/07/2025 12:30

Severe abdominal pains
Constipation
Sickness
Fatigue
blood in stool
