Funeral costs for brother

Richard2022 · 25/06/2025 23:11

My brother suddenly passed away over the weekend.
He was unemployed and on benefits.
Dont think he has a lot of savings so would he be entitled to any help towards funeral costs?

thanks

Sorry for your loss x check on the gov.uk website, I think there is a bereavement section on there. Again sorry for your loss 🫂🙏❤️

He might get a public health funeral if no next of kin

It would depend on whether the people taking responsibility for the funeral are on benefits really rather than him. DWP won't pay out a funeral grant if family members can pay and even if they do it rarely covers the full cost. The most I've known them to pay was £1800 and that was at the height of covid.

Out of date information by the looks of it as tax credits don't even exist any more !

Is there any chance of an old work pension somewhere or a grant from a benevolent fund if he was e.g ex military?

If there are no funds, the local council will arrange a simple funeral if family aren't able to club together to raise funds.

lilacbreeze · 25/06/2025 23:40

Yes he will, however they will want his next of kin to pay before they agree to. My friend died with no savings and living in a rented council flat, his family were still alive but poor in rented council housing also. Unfortunately as they had SOME money (some savings not much) the public health service wouldn’t really help them. He ended up having a very basic funeral which bless him was still nice. But no bells and whistles. Plain non religious cremation, no flowers bar the ones I sent. Donations toward the funeral were taken presumably so his family could recoup some of their money.

public health service funerals are for those who literally have nothing. No family with any kind of money, and no assets.

There is a funeral express payment my friends family got (just over a thousand pound) however it would only apply to you if you yourself were on benefits.

Expenses payment *

This is only for people whose partner has died. With OP it’s her brother.
