I was wondering if anyone knew from experience (unfortunately) roughly how long bereavement support payments take to be paid. All I was told that it was done in ‘datal order’! I don’t have a young family, so I’m presuming I won’t be dealt with as quickly but despite all that I thought after 8 weeks I should have received something by now? They’ve confirmed all my documents have been received and they’ve returned them to me, so I’m now getting a bit anxious tbh.

I got mine really quickly I had to take his death certificate to the local job centre first.

RubyBeeGood · 25/04/2025 19:51

Thank you. Not sure why mine is taking so long.

DoMiraculousThingsWithBroccoli · 25/04/2025 20:25

Sorry for your loss. Mine took about 7 weeks. Are you going to claim universal credit too? They will class it as income and take some of it off you.

ScottBakula · 25/04/2025 20:27

I think I waited about 4/5 weeks , I could only ( at the time ) provide a interim death certificate.

I think it would be worth you chasing it up.

RubyBeeGood · 26/04/2025 06:49

Thanks. No, not claiming for universal credit. I’m definitely going to try ringing them on Monday to chase it up. It’s not quite the ‘few weeks’ that I thought it’d be.

OP posts:
MrsBirkett · 28/04/2025 16:02

Definitely chase it up, mine only took a couple of weeks

Stuffedbysparky · 05/05/2025 23:19

About three to four weeks. DH passed beginning of Jan this year.

RubyBeeGood · 06/05/2025 07:33

Thank you everyone. I’ve spoken to the DWP a couple of times now since I last posted and the latest is that the guy was escalating it for me! He said should be sorted within a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed 🤞I’d also like to add I’m sorry for all of your losses. It’s not an easy time. Take care all.

I hope it gets sorted out soon @RubyBeeGood .
You are going through enough atm you can do without this hassle.

My husband died 3 weeks ago 18th April 2025

I wasn’t in a state of mind to think about applying until last week but you can’t anyway until you’ve registered the death and have a certificate.

I had to apply online and then physically take in a Death Certificate to the jobcentre of all places for them to scan and return.

Two days later I had notification my application was successful.

I have two dependant children but only one is under 16, so I think I receive the higher rate. I’m still not sure what it is exactly, a lump sum then monthly payment for 2 years.

I was made redundant a week before he died, and my husband’s small business was struggling really money was not his motivation in life, so only a few bits of equipment and a truck to sell at some point. No life insurance or pension and bank accounts and credit card in debt, so the bereavement lump sum will at least pay our rent for the next couple of months until I’m able to face getting a new job, which at my age 56 will be difficult possibly.

I’ve now applied for Universal Credit but despite all the TV living off benefits in luxury programmes you see, I’m unconvinced a 3 person family two of whom are over 18 and now out of work, with no care plans or caring allowances or anything like that, are going to be awarded benefits of minimum £2k a month to cover our rent and essentials.

I see myself working warehouse nightshifts or 2-3 daytime jobs now to keep the roof over our heads. I won’t know what the landlord wants to do with the tenancy until mid June.

keep chasing

NerdyBird · 11/05/2025 15:28

It only took about a week overall, and that was with only an interim death certificate. It was one of the few elements that was quick and smooth. Definitely chase it.

RubyBeeGood · 11/05/2025 15:44

I’m so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your experience too@MrsSignmaker

I think mine took a week or so, as far as I remember, it was very quick. I didn't have to take the death certificate anywhere.
I also continued to receive carers allowance for a few weeks.
Edited to add: I've just checked & the first (larger) payment came through exactly 10 days after DH died, so it must have been 4 or 5 days after I applied. The first regular payment can through exactly one month after he died.

RubyBeeGood · 12/05/2025 07:26

Thanks for your info and also I’m sorry for your loss too. I’m still waiting … but keeping fingers crossed for something this week as 2 weeks since my last phone call.

Stuffedbysparky · 18/05/2025 10:01

Just to keep the post information helpful for posters reading later, I have just found out that to get the lump sum you need to claim within 12 months of the death. For the monthly payments it’s 21 months, and basically the longer you leave it sounds like you won’t get the full amount. So don’t delay, claim asap.

MrsSignmaker · 18/05/2025 13:37

We now have the Bereavement Support higher tier payment which is such a relief as I can now pay the rent and bills for 3 months

But does anyone know of when my youngest turns 16 next month, the payments stop? He will be staying in education until 18

thankyou so much for any advice

RubyBeeGood · 23/05/2025 11:52

@MrsSignmaker I don’t know the answer to your query I’m afraid but glad you’ve received something!

I haven’t received anything however and it’s now been with their banking team for 3 weeks. I’m ringing each week and have just come off the phone to someone who is investigating it for me. Fingers crossed again.

RubyBeeGood · 31/05/2025 07:40

So an update in case anyone has been in a similar situation.. I’m now 3 months down the line since I applied. I was told at end of April it was with the decision maker and on the 1st May with banking department… I’ve called every Friday since and each time was told it was still with the banking department. Until yesterday when I was told it was ‘with the decision maker’????!!! Obviously I queried this as it’s gone backwards and the guy said I should hear this week by letter with their decision but couldn’t say on the phone either way when I asked if it was suddenly going to be refused… all I can say is I hope not too many people have to deal with this kind of thing after losing their partner…

You may find it helpful to write to your contact, your local MP and cc Torsten Bell who is the pensions minister. I think you will find things get expedited fairly swiftly following this.

RubyBeeGood · 31/05/2025 18:43

@LatteLady thank you!

OP posts:
Stuffedbysparky · 31/05/2025 23:47

@RubyBeeGood i’m rather shocked you still haven’t got it. I really do think you should do as @LatteLady says and contact your MP, I think you’ve been treated appallingly.

I’ve a friend who contacts her MP a fair bit and I did it regarding DH blue badge application which hadn’t been sorted after 19 weeks and it was resolved in days. Hope you get somewhere soon.

RubyBeeGood · 07/06/2025 18:52

Well .. it was finally sorted last week … phew. Not sure what went wrong but the very helpful lady I spoke to a couple of times called me Wednesday to say it was all sorted and the same day the money turned up in my account. Thanks everyone for your advice and sharing your experience. Much appreciated… take care all.

OP posts:
FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 07/06/2025 19:58

Thank god for that last thing we need at that time is money worries.

ScottBakula · 07/06/2025 22:42

It's ridiculous that it has taken so long to sort out but I am glad it's sorted out at last.

LatteLady · 09/06/2025 13:21

I am so pleased that this has finally been sorted for you and hope that you are doing OK as you navigate this.
