Funeral music for elderly lady

Hello, my elderly granny has passed away at 97 years of age. Any suggestions for appropriate funeral music for a humanist service - she didn't have any favourite music but really need something for the funeral that's appropriate to her age. Any suggestions?

Glen Miller. 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square'. Beautiful music, not religious and would have been enormously popular when she was in her late teens.

I Vow To Thee My Country?

Sorry for your loss OP.
My Mum's 92 and she's asked for Somewhere Over The Rainbow at her funeral.

I was at a funeral today, of a lady in her 80s - she had Elvis, Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra!

FleaDog · 21/02/2025 21:54

Debbie Wiseman "Myrtle" is a lovely piece of music

doodlejump1980 · 21/02/2025 21:56

How about the theme from Gabriel’s oboe? Gorgeous music. Sorry for your loss

Negroany · 21/02/2025 22:06

For my nan we had Somewhere Over The Rainbow and You'll Never walk Alone (show tune).

For mum we had Bruce Springsteen (Tougher Than The Rest) and Helen Reddy (I Am Woman).

Dad had You Were Always On My Mind (Pet Shop Boys) and The Internationale - both of which he asked for.

It's hard to know what's right, people like different things

If I was choosing for my mum, it would be As Time Goes By, from Casablanca - her favourite film ever since her teens. She aso likes the Bryan Ferry version of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.

I Vow To Thee My Country is religious, so wouldn't really work with a humanist service.

Sorry for your loss. 💐
Have always loved Clair de lune by debussy, and it was played at my grandads funeral. It's the tune played at the end of oceans eleven when they are watching the fountains and leaving each other.
Also like Chopin for lovely classical music.

An elderly relative had Blue Moon and Moon river which are both lovely thoughtful pieces and would have been popular when she was young

bluesatin · 21/02/2025 22:11

Our next door neighbour who was in his late 80s had "Always look on the bright side of life" from Monty Python.

Redflagsabounded · 21/02/2025 22:11

This might sound weird, but I was at a funeral with the music from 'Last of the Summer Wine' and it was just perfect.

Cynic17 · 21/02/2025 22:50

Why does it have to be pop music? I would say classical is always better, for any age- much more dignified. It's a bit of a cliche, but the obvious choice is Elgar's Nimrod.
I find anything with words has potential to be a bit tacky.

mitogoshigg · 21/02/2025 23:11

Apres un reve by Faure is lovely.

But where was she born, that might help with inspiration, I know someone from south London and they chose the Lambeth Walk!

Seacatt · 21/02/2025 23:16

We had 'The Lark Ascending' by Vaughan Williams for both of my parent's funerals.

A lovely old lady I knew who had a great sense of humour pre-picked her funeral music, and as the coffin left the church to go to the crematorium, they played Gracie Fields singing “Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye”.
Everyone burst out laughing - which she would have loved.

ohthefrostishere · 21/02/2025 23:24

Lark ascending - beautiful

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 21/02/2025 23:31

Sorry for your loss. I think she would have loved the music of the 50s as she will have been in her prime then.

You Send Me by Sam Cooke. Also love Glenn Miller.

Those are amazing ideas thank you all. I will spend some time listening to them today

It was my 82 year old mums funeral last week we had hymns at the.requiam mass ( she waa a Catholic) but we has Dancing Queen at the Crematorium, she always loved a party it brought a smile to those that knew her well

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/03/2025 12:18

My grandmother had 'The Last Waltz' by Engelbert Humperdinck (had to check that spelling!). Not a dry eye in the house.

Rocknrollstar · 02/03/2025 13:10

My mother was 102 when she died. We don’t have music at Jewish funerals but she would have chosen Queen, Saturday Night Fever and Barry Manilow. She hated all the old songs.

BillyILash · 02/03/2025 13:25

Amazing Grace is my all time favourite funeral song.

My Way by Frank Sinatra is on my list of songs I want.

Also like We’ll Meet Again by Vera Lynn, very age related for your granny. Also Bluebirds Over The White Cliffs of Dover. I actually like most Vera Lynn.

My friend has insisted she has Don’t You (Forget about me) by Simple Minds played at her funeral.

We have a family funeral song that’s played and sung at all of families funerals. Music is very much an important part for us. My Dad went out to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, he was a massive Western and Clint Eastwood fan.

chisanunian · 02/03/2025 13:28

Our late relative had 'In My Life' by the Beatles at her humanist funeral, she'd got her choices all written down and we followed her instructions.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 02/03/2025 13:32

For my mum who was in her late 80s we had Elgars Nimrod on the way in and Larks Ascending on the way out
Think they are both beautiful and classic.
