Hi,
My best friend has sadly died and I’m helping to sort out the funeral. She has 2 children, 8 and 10. She was not poorly, her death was a shock and she’d only just turned 40. She was non religious. Do you have any suggestions for suitable readings? Thanks ❤️

Apologies for the 'live love laugh' blog this links to, but coincidentally I heard this poem today and I loved it: Mary Oliver Wild Geese

Also, it's a little cliched but actually perfect for the children: Do not stand by my grave and weep

I'm sorry for your loss.

I’ve been to funerals where excerpts from Winnie the Pooh have been read.

Such a terribly sad loss, OP. I am so sorry for your friend's untimely death.

From The Little Prince...

“All men (people) have the stars but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For businessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent.
You–you alone–will have the stars as no one else has them–
And at night you will look up at the stars.
My star will just be one of the stars, for you.
In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night.
And so you will love to watch all the stars…
You–only you–will have stars that can laugh."

Waterbugs and Dragonflies by Doris Stickney is a lovely book that might help. My friend’s little girl read it out at her mother’s funeral with the help of the priest.
