Funeral songs

My DM died very recently and I am in the process of arranging her funeral.

She loved Dean Martin songs. Could anyone suggest how that will work as I would like to play some of his songs. It will be a Catholic funeral so I guess we cannot play during the church service. She will be cremated.

Could anyone advise please? I am not thinking straight at present.

Can you play them as the coffin arrives and leaves? Thats what we did for my Nan, admittedly it was CoE though.

I’m really sorry for your loss. Are you using a funeral director? Usually they or the vicar/celebrant will help you work out how to plan things. At the Crem you will be able to have up to three pieces of music - one for entry and one for exit

Thank you for responding so quickly. Any songs anyone could suggest bearing in mind the circumstances?

My nan had funeral service in a Catholic Church. We had the traditional hymns throughout the service but during the eulogy her children spoke about her and mentioned about how she loved to sing and dance and one of her favourites was a particular song which was then played as a "moment of reflection / celebration"

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. The net could probably help you find something suitable; there are a few sites to look at, one being https://www.joincake.com/blog/dean-martin-funeral-songs/

Will you be having a service at the crematorium after the church service?

Some crematoriums let you have 4 songs, we had 4 for my son and then my dad.

I'd suggest you listen to Dean Martin, and you'll probably work out what songs you remember her listening too, singing along too. See what brings back memories for you.

Sorry for your loss 💐

Sorry for your loss OP. We had a Judy Collins song after the Eulogy. The eulogy ended saying 'now one of X's favourite songs let's all reflect on our own memories of her'

With my grandparents we had a church service and then a second shorter one at the crem directly afterwards. Music was played there along with family reading poems etc.

Be careful what music you pick though. I find it very hard to listen to some songs I previously loved and listened to all the time after they were used in a loved ones service.

For my dads recent funeral I picked things he loved that I also wouldn't have chosen to listen to myself to avoid that. I'm still working on picking out music for my OH and I'm finding that much harder.

If the service is at a church, it will depend on their policy and probably more importantly whether they have the right tech.

At the crem they have a sound system but sometimes you need to choose music on their system, all depends on the location

As a former crematorium manager, I can tell you that Dean Martin's "Little old wine drinker, me" was a very popular choice at funerals!

Tracker1234 · 02/04/2024 16:58

Dean Martin gets everywhere doesnt he!

Matt Monroe- Softly as I leave you?

Mairzydotes · 02/04/2024 18:03

Ask your funeral director.

When my dad died (he had a service at the crem) , the funeral director told us we could have pretty much anything, as long as it was on Spotify. I imagine the crem had the appropriate license to play recorded music.

I am afraid it has to be Dean..Mum loved him.

Which were her favourite songs of his? I’d pick them.

i desensitised myself to the songs by playing them loads of times until they didn’t upset me.

Tracker1234 · 08/04/2024 23:16

Me again. So we are now struggling with hymns played on an organ. I like Ava Marie but on the organ without singing it really isn’t the same. Abide with me is a possibility. Any others anyone would suggest?

We have Moonriver (Andy Williams) and I’ll be Seeing You (Dean Martin) already chosen for the crematorium.

Rory-100% agree re hearing the songs again and again. Also thinking of Stars from Les Miz.
