You just tell them.

So sorry for your loss
Email them with the details and say you will not be in tomorrow but will be in touch shortly

Just call someone in the morning and say you won’t be in due to a family bereavement.

I’m sorry for your loss. You tell them what you’ve written here, and I hope they will be supportive and give you the time you need.

A quick email, saying you need a day off to break the news to you man about her son and you will give them a call in the morning before your shift starts so you know the message has been received if you don’t get a reply back.

Apologise for the short notice but promise to keep them updated for your return.

Hope you’re ok.

Follow your normal procedures for sick leave but explain it’s for a sudden bereavement.

In addition to just telling them, your HR should have some policy for death in the family. It is usually a lot more than one day off work! Usually 1-2 weeks.

It wouldn’t be 1-2 weeks compassionate leave for an uncle in any place I have worked unfortunately but it should be possible to self certify for up to 5 days if you are too distressed to work. I’m sorry for your loss and hope you are ok.

Not usual for it to be anywhere near that long.

there was a thread about it last month.
