Why is a post mortem needed?

My nan died last week. Her death was expected, she had seen the GP the week before and the hospice team had put in a syringe driver for pain relief. The GP is now on holiday so can’t sign the death certificate and so she’s been referred to the coroner which we were told was a formally. The, coroner has ordered a post mortem and told us they can’t disclose the reason.

What would the reason be? We don’t particularly want one or the delay.

Did she die at home with nobody as a witness ect in her sleep?

I’m sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately it’s probably a post Harold Shipman requirement.

@LittleMrsPretty in a care home during the night. No family there, not sure if staff were in the room but would have been close by.

So even though death was expected, there is doubt over the cause so post mortem is needed to rule our unnatural causes.

In the aftermath of Harold Shipman every so many deaths require a post mortem. My grandfather died of cancer in hospital surrounded by his family but still needed one. It didn't really cause any delays.
