Short funeral poem needed for brother

hopelessbusiness · 03/05/2023 16:47

Hello
I lost my lovely brother in the early hours of this morning. He was only 55 and died after a short and brutal illness. I want to read a short poem at his funeral - I've looked online at all the usual suspects but none is quite right. Does anybody have any different ones? Must be

  • short
  • Non religious
  • Not 'old' language (Shakespeare, Donne etc)

Thanks in advance .

Had this for my dad's funeral
It's burns

An honest man here lies at rest,
As e’er God with His image blest:
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d,
Few heads with knowledge so inform’d:
If there’s another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this

I’m so sorry for your loss.
You could also think of song lyrics to read like a poem or a reading from a children’s book.

Mbop · 03/05/2023 17:23

Not, how did he die, but how did he live?
Not, what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of his birth.
Nor what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with words of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away?

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute and unbroken continuity.
What is this death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just round the corner.

All is well.
Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Afterglow (Anon)
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

Mrsweasleysclock · 03/05/2023 17:40

Tell us a little about him op. Some things that you would like included in the poem

33goingon64 · 03/05/2023 17:42

That Man is a Success by Robert Louis Stevenson

That man is a success
who has lived well,
laughed often and loved much;
who has gained the respect of intelligent men and women
and the love of children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who leaves the world better than he found it,
who has never lacked appreciation of Earth’s beauty
or failed to express it;
who looked for the best in others,
and gave the best he had.

I'm so sorry for your loss... I'm following because my darling Dad died on Monday and my brothers and I are meeting tonight to discuss his funeral and are looking for a poem..

Mrsweasleysclock · 03/05/2023 17:56

Death is an end
The closing of a door
But in my heart you'll stay forever more

My brother, my friend, my pillar of support
Taken away from life too short

Today I have tears but they won't stay here,
I'll think of your smile until they disappear

Rest now dear brother you have left your mark
This world is a little better because of the imprint of your heart

Let me go gentle into that dark night
Let me not rage against the dying light
There is another light that beckons me
That from this garish light will set me free
It softly glows and grows on that far side
I hear a hymn that sings with me abide

Let me go gentle into that dark night
I will not rage against the close of day
Let me be like a glowing sunset, pray
Sending colours of every rainbow hue
From brightest red up to the deepest blue
Let me learn from the deathbed of the sun
To leave the light and from its brightness run
Let me go gentle at the close of day.

Now, loved ones, let me wish you fond farewell
The time is right; I hear the tolling bell
It’s not a knell it has a happy ring
Like Christmas bells and voices carolling
My heart towards that call is rushing now
I’ve lived my life; please let me take that bow
And let me gently wish you all farewell.

I read this at my lovely brothers funeral ❤️

And I’m sorry for your loss. Losing my brother auddenly at 47 was so hard. It does get easier and I can now remember him with a smile.

BIWI · 03/05/2023 18:22

My brother died just over a month ago, aged only 62. He was a very keen golfer. Just in case yours was @hopelessbusiness, this is the poem we had read:

THE GOLF COURSE IN THE SKY
As eighteen flags flew at half mast, and
Glasses were soberly raised high
The latest member was having a ball
At the golf course in the sky

Freed from the gravity of the situation
The first tee shot soared through space
Bringing a wondrous, beaming smile
To a kind, down to earth face

Surrounded by old club friends
Once thought never to be seen again
The infinity course beckoned ahead
Eighteen holes were for mere mortal men

BIWI · 03/05/2023 18:23

... and I'm very sorry for your loss Flowers

hopelessbusiness · 03/05/2023 18:41

@JosieOhNo I like that.
@Mrsweasleysclock that's lovely but I don't think I could read it for crying.

Some good suggestions, thank you all.

I just wrote that quickly. I can change/add bits to make it more personalised to his character and what message you want to convey, if you want to give me a few bullet points.

hopelessbusiness · 03/05/2023 19:06

@Mrsweasleysclock didn't realise you'd written it - you're very clever.
I don't know really, he was quiet, considered, thoughtful and so generous towards me and his niece and nephew.
I want to convey that I am grateful for his 'big brother' protection/guidance and that I feel like half of me has gone now and I will miss him desperately.

Sorry for your loss OP. I lost my sister. It doesn't seem right does it?
