Funeral and burial

I am about to have to organise a funeral. My parent has a funeral plan but I have some questions as I have not done anything like this before.

  • can I register death in my local area as opposed to where they died?
  • parent wants to buried and has already booked a burial spot. What sort of date should I be aiming for. I am suspecting well into the New Year.

Any tips anyone can give me please generally. I want to get this right!

Many thanks

Sorry for your loss. Especially difficult at this time of year. 💐
This is a useful source of information, presuming you are in England:

You need to register the death in the area they passed away in. The funeral director will be able to advise on a time frame for burial as things have to be taken in to consideration such as their availability and that of the vicar/priest/Church or celebrant.

Sorry for your loss

Error! you can register the death at any registry office but you might have to wait for the death certificate if out of area. If you need it same day then register in the area the person died in

Thank you all for responding so quickly. I live over 100 miles away hence the question. What are the downsides to waiting a few days. I guess it will depend what it stops me doing.

I organise funerals, typically they are being organised for around 3 weeks after the date of death this year though many families are opting for longer lead times to allow for family to travel from overseas or to get a Friday because it's easier for work.

Availability of the burial ground and the celebrant is a factor too, they will have set time slots. I'm currently booking first week of Jan but squeezed one in on 22nd today too.

Try not to be overwhelmed by the options, some funeral directors upsell more than I think is ethical, and remember it's your family's choice, a good celebrant will listen and be able to advise what will work for you. The funerals I organise are religious but you can have what suits you

Thank you. Father has already brought a place in a cemetery. I am due to go on a big holiday mid Jan. It won’t be a big funeral although parent wants two black horses!

if I asked for it to be done early Feb is that completely out of the question?

He has quite a hefty pre paid funeral plan as well.
