My Aunt died this morning - the last of her siblings

My aunt who was 93 died this morning. She had had dementia for a number of years so it was a relief for my cousins that she is no longer confused. She was the last of three siblings to die, my uncle at 96 earlier in the year and mother who died 7 years ago at 85. It is the end of an era.

I didn’t think I would be so upset about her death as I know that she was very elderly and confused but death was the last link with my mother and grandparents. It is hard to realise that my siblings and cousins are now the older generation.

Sorry for your loss: it must be hard to see the last of a generation. It might also be stirring up sadness re losing your mum too

I’m so sorry for your loss. I am struggling with the same realisation as my father passed away a year ago and was the last of his generation. I am now the eldest in the family. Older than all my siblings, in laws and cousins (and their children obvs). Our own mortality just seems that much closer when you are next in line and so closer to death than birth. It’s very upsetting. And I miss having someone older and wiser about to chat to you know? It’s like I’m now the elder but I don’t feel very wise or any different from my 20yr self. Anyway, handhold to you in this difficult time you’re not alone. 💐

That's really sad news for you and the family. I’m sorry for the loss of your aunt. I lost my aunty 4 years ago she was 66 years and last month my 83 year old aunt. We were so close it’s such a sad time. Sending condolences.

I'm so sorry.
Yes you feel somehow unmoored, the past yanked away from you.

I know exactly what you mean. It's as though there aren't any "grown ups" left. And no one who can come up with random memories about my childhood or what my parents were like when I was young, let alone before I was born.

Thank you for your kind comments. My sister and I had a joint party in May as we had both celebrated our golden weddings this year and it was lovely to see my aunt - who didn’t really know what was going on - and have people who were descendants of my maternal grandparents from my aunt as the eldest down to my great niece who was 2. One last happy memory.

No “grown ups” left! I agree, it was a strange feeling when the last of my mums generation died, my mum who was the eldest died comparatively young and the aunty who died last was the youngest, a little tiny baby who no one thought would survive infancy and she outlived the rest of them by a long way.
