How much bleeding after missed m/c and erpc?

Does anyone have any advice on bleeding after a d + c/erpc please?

I had a missed miscarriage last week - should have been 11 weeks, but baby was only 6 weeks on scan and I chose to have eprc straight away as it had already been 5 weeks and I'd had no bleeding or any other signs of m/c coming.

On Thursday afternoon I had the erpc which seemed to be ok, apparently I lost quite a lot of blood during the operation, and bled a bit in the hospital afterwards.

After I came home I didn't seem to bleed much that evening or for most of Friday, then in the evening had very painful cramps and passed quite a big clot and the cramps stopped (but bleeding heavy). Sorry to be graphic but need comparisons please.

Same thing has happened tonight; I've been fine all day, lightish bleeding, but all afternoon had bad cramps and eventually passed a big piece of something (c10cm long and fairly solid (sorry, gross, tmi)) and now the cramps have stopped and bleeding slowed right down.

I'm hoping that's going to be it, as I really wasn't expecting to have cramps and be passing clots and tissue etc after the d+c. One of the reasons I chose to have it was to avoid some of the pain and unpleasantness of a normal m/c.

Of course, it's the weekend, so can't see GP and I'm hoping/guessing this is not unusual anyway. Does anyone have any similar experience of what to expect?

so sorry, sophmum i had a m/c last year but it passed naturally. if you search on "erpc" i think you might find some useful info. otherwise, i hope someone more knowledgeable will come back to you soon. so sorry you are going through this

cab · 20/11/2004 22:57

Sophmum sorry for your loss.
Sorry I can't help cos haven't had a d&C. Did have a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks. Once the bleeding had almost dried up I passed something like a huge egg (big shock), about a day later the bleeding stopped.
Hope someone comes along soon who can help. If not phone the early pregnancy unit and ask them.

serenequeen · 20/11/2004 22:59

yes, do get back to your epu or a&e if you are worried - don't wait for gp.

cardigan · 20/11/2004 23:03

Had similiar m/c experience. Bleeding after d&c wasn't bad. Sometimes there was alot at other times not much. Gradually finished. Periods returned 6 weeks later. Terrible time. I feel for you here. I'd check with the docs on your blood loss just to be sure. You've got enough to think about without having to worry about this. I'd feel it best to get it checked out. Sorry you're going through this xxx

serenequeen · 21/11/2004 09:40

hi sophmum, how are you today?

Sophmum · 21/11/2004 15:09

hi serenequeen, thanks for your replies. Doing fine today, bleeding has slowed right down and no more pain or clots at moment. Hoping it doesn't start again tonight - if it does I will contact hospital.

Thanks for bumping up.

Hi Sophmum, have been thinking of you since Thursday.

I also had clots and lots of bleeding after my D&C, although the clots were a lot smaller than the one you passed (which must have been a pretty horrible experience). I also had fairly uncomfortable cramps for a few days too - hot water bottles helped. The actual bleeding lasted for about two weeks afterwards, but after the first couple of days I didn't have any more clots.

I would second what everyone else has said - if you get any more big clots, definitely go back to the hospital. It's so difficult to know what's 'normal' in this situation.

Hope you manage to take it easy for a few days, as your body has been through a lot. Sending you big hugs Sophmum.x

Thanks Sophmum.

How are things today? I hope everything has settled down now.

Thinking of you.x

Sophmum · 23/11/2004 22:16

thanks mrsw

Things seem to have settled now = still bleeding quite a lot, but no more cramps or clots.

I've been out and bought iron tablets today so hopefully they may pick me up a bit - I seem very pale and tired.

Thanks for your thoughts.

hi sophmum, was just going to search for this thread and up it popped on active conversations.

agree re iron tablets and anything else you can do to take care of yourself atm - including rest, pampering, good food - whatever you need.

i'm so sorry you have been through this miserable experience.

Sophmum · 23/11/2004 22:30

thank you serenequeen

I'm taking it pretty easy (as much as poss with a 2 y old!)

Probably shouldn't be staying up late on MN either.

Perhaps some dark chocolate too? Think that's got lots good things in it, including iron.

Hope your two year old lets you gets some rest - videos of films like Toy Story and Finding Nemo always manage to keep my 2 year old DS quiet (for short periods of time anyway). And you could put your feet up at the same time.

Take care.x

suzywong · 24/11/2004 13:06

Sophmum, sorry to hear about your situation.
Exactly the same thing happened to me just before I gotpg with ds1.

I bled like a b@@£$%d for three weeks, clots of black jelly. It got so bad I had to go to A&E and take the clots with me so they could have a look. Then it just stopped and my period came back as normal a month later.

Sorry to be so graphic

Better get DP out to the chocolate shop as the other suggest.

I had an ERPC at around the 11 week mark, and the amount of bleeding was quite small.

I had heavy mucousy spotting before the scan, but nothing that a panty liner couldn't cope with.

In those days, they whipped you up to gynae for a D&C straightaway. Afterwards, I only had bleeding (bright red) on exertion - and that lasted for about a week.

So, nothing much - but it was for a blighted ovum so I don't suppose there were a lot of "products" to expel.

serenequeen · 24/11/2004 20:50

hi sophmum, hope you are ok today.

Does anyone have any advice on bleeding after a erpc please. I started having small bleeds at 5 weeks pregnant and about every week or so after that, but was told it was normal if i had i had no pain. At my 12 week scan found the heartbeat had stopped at about 8 weeks so i opted for medical management which was very painful and horrific i lost everything exept the baby so had to have an erpc in the end anyway. Anyway its been 4 weeks on monday since the erpc and im still lightly bleeding. My doctors put me on antibiotics in case its an infection but im scared that there not going to work and im going to have to go back to hospital, ive been on them for 2 days. Is any of this seeming familiar to anyone i would really like to hear it!

Geets · 27/01/2009 19:11

Hi there,
I am going through it at the moment. I had to have an erpc last thursday. I had a baby 9 weeks ago and hadnt stopped bleeding. I had a scan that showed up retained products so the hospital insisted i have the op. I have been having the worst cramps and continuous bleeding which i am quite worried about - weirdly mostly at night too - not sure why! anyway, i went back to the doc yesterday and was prescribed stronger pain killers and told to go back to A&E if it hasnt calmed down in two days. If anyone has any advise i would appreciate it - i'm so worried that they did something wrong in the op. S.xx

anybody reading this, considering having an ERPC or D&C needs to look up ashermans syndrome. It is one of the most under diagnosed causes of infertility, The chances of getting it from D&C or ERPC is 16%, this goes up to 28% if its repeated. Dont let any doctor or nurse tell you its rare... its not, its just rarly diagnosed with out several years of other useless treatments first!
