Doing something in remembrance

This weekend marks the year since my dear FIL suddenly passed away.
We live overseas so DH has gone away to be with his DM as we both felt was right.
I'm here with the kids all weekend - they're not really aware of the date but would be if I told them if that makes sense
Anyway I was thinking about what we could do this weekend as activities and started thinking about doing something together for the kids to do to remember him and sort of mark the day in a nice and not too sad way - for example going to buy a tree to plant in our garden that will be a reminder of him. The problem with that is that we are in canada and it is ridiculously cold right now and the ground will be impenetrable until April at the earliest
So I wanted to ask for any ideas that are similar that we might be able to do this weekend that would be something lasting like that?
I had considered if we could get a tree or plant to keep inside until spring but am totally clueless about that sort of thing !!

Thank u in advance

How about digging out some photos of him and making a scrap book type thing? If the DC are too young for it to be all about him, just make it a family one?
Sorry for your loss x

sorry for your lossFlowers
the tree sounds a great idea but not ideal if the ground is too hard.🤔
How about an annual cake for grandad? bake a nice cake together and let the DC decorate it? you could light a candle for him.

A remembrance rose could be purchased now and kept in some soil outside until the ground was warm enough to dig
I don't know if you can purchase David Austin roses where you are?
I actually think that planting a living thing is a lovely thing to do and just when you think that the winter can't carry on much longer you'll see little signs of growth in new buds each year
