Supporting my mum

My dad died on Monday. Wasn't expected, though he was being treated for pneumonia, although he actually died of sepsis.

Obviously a massive shock for my mum and my brother (who still lives at home).

I went straight to my mums and stayed there till y'day. I live in the midlands and she lives down south.

I'm back down on Sunday as we have to go to the registry office on Monday and then the funeral directors on Tuesday.

I felt I needed to leave my mum and brother in their own company for a while as I kept up a front so that we could do all the practical things that need doing.

My concern is that because of the distance, once the funeral is over, how they will cope.

My Nan lives very locally to my mum and is 93. My mum does a lot for her, but she's quite a depressive person and I know this is going to have a negative impact on her.

Because of work, my only opportunity to visit mum and brother is at the weekends. Brother works, so he has a 'distraction' but mums retired with pretty much no friends.

I’m so sorry about your dad chuffnstuff. What a terrible shock for you, your mum and brother. It must be incredibly hard for you living away from your family whilst you are all coping with this. You have been there for them as much as possible already. You can only do so much. And I am sure they feel your presence and support even when you are not there, or on the end of the phone. I live 3 hours away from my family - my dad is seriously ill now - I’m back every few days but worry so much about my mum and my sister in my absence so I understand your position. But you need to look after yourself as well as your loved ones - you are going through such heartbreak too. Much love to you all.

Thank you @Nankles. Very strange times all round. I think we can only start to grieve (and see what happens) once the funeral has taken place x
