Hello I'm asking on behalf of a child at uni who is grieving v badly missing mum . They hv counselling support there but minimal . We are trying to support from afar but wonder if any of you have had proper bereavement counselling and what helped you? Do you recommend anything also anything to read . To be honest any advise would help as we really want to help but don't really know what to do and feel helpless

I found bereavement counselling very helpful. Did they have any counselling at the time?

These may be of help.

They only offered 6 sessions , rubbish I know . My worry is was it bereavement counselling? Or just any counselling . The person is unlikely to ask for help as trying to be brave but really struggling and no other family

If they are at uni the chaplaincy team would be worth a try. They are happy to see students of any faith or none and usually have no waiting list. It wouldn't be formal counselling but sometimes a regular chat with someone who understands grief is very helpful.

Uni counselling services tend to be under a lot of pressure. Cruse bereavement care might be another option.

Macmillan have a helpline number if your student would want to speak to someone direct.

Our local hospice offers bereavement counselling & support to anyone who needs it so it might be worth approaching their local one
