Should we send sympathy cards?

I am not sure if this the right place for this question.

However, my FIL has just died. I have only met my DP's family once as they live in another country. Do we send sympathy cards?

Thanks in advance,

Are you not travelling to the funeral?

PestoSnowissimos · 13/03/2017 10:21

Yes I would

Is your oh going back for the funeral ? If a member of my partners immediate family died I would be going back( if at all possible ) for the funeral

HateSummer · 13/03/2017 10:25

Such a close family member, I wouldn't send a card, I'd try to phone up and talk to someone and pass my condolences.

If this is your dp father what has died then no I wouldn't send sympathy cards as he is part of the bereaved family. Plus I'd try to go to the funeral.

Oh yes, we are going to the funeral but because we're not in the same country I wondered whether to send cards in advance.
Thanks for all of the advice.

No, I wouldn't be sending sympathy cards in that situation - your DH would be expecting to receive them, if anything.

I agree. Thought you meant in lieu of attending. No, I wouldn't send a card to mother in law

My father in law died last year and we didn't send a card. We did however receive quite a few.

Iris65 · 14/03/2017 16:59

Yes that's what I thought, but I don't have a lot of experience with bereavement and the associated expectations.
Thank you

No you don't need to send cards, you're immediate family.
