I am currently having a m/c (9.5 wks)and the dr said that I should expect it to be like a heavy period + with blobs.I have that but yesterday I also passed a big thing about the size of a small jacket potato(!sorry rubbish description - it was not blood and was quite firm but had some give when I pushed it, it was a sort of greyish/pinkish colour) - I am sorry for my ignorance but is this the foetus/placenta? For some reason I had understood that everything would break up before it came out.

Sadly I suspect this was you losing the actual pregnancy sack, yes This is what happened to me and it was very noticable when I lost it, although smaller than what you describe as I was only about 7 weeks.

I am really sorry you are going through this

DelGirl · 14/06/2004 17:53

So sorry to hear about your m/c. Don't really have experience to pass on sorry. When I had an m/c at 11 weeks I was taken into hospital to have an erpc and bled quite heavily for 2 weeks aferward but nothing like you describe. Have you not been given this option? To have an erpc I mean. Hugs

fisil · 14/06/2004 18:21

big hugs lostinparis ((()))

I had the d&c too so know nothing of this. Before my d&c the doctor stressed that I must go straight back to the hospial if I passed anything I didn't recognise. Can you go to an EPU? Did you keep it (sorry to be disgusting, but that's what they usually ask)?

Hulababy · 14/06/2004 18:23

Forgot to say that I had an appointment at the EPU the next day for a scan. this simply confirmed what I already knew - that I had had a mc and lost the baby. You really could do with the scan as it will ensure that the loss was complete.

MiriamR · 14/06/2004 18:46

Really sorry you're going through this. I too had this happen to me and agree with Hulababy, it sounds like the pregnancy sack. It is quite distinctive. Passed mine the 2nd day after the m/c and bled for a couple of weeks afterwards. Whilst I had a scan to confirm the m/c, I didn't have one afterwards as the mat ass unit examined the sack and thought that it was complete. Big hugs to you.

hana · 14/06/2004 18:46

so sorry that you've had a m/c lostinparis, and it's awful to 'see' what you're losing. I've had 2 m/c and it sounds very similiar.
When you've stopped bleeding (could be a few days to a few weeks) I would ask for a checkup (might be an internal scan or smear like look) - so that you know you're not at risk of an infection.

HOpe you're getting lots of love and support from your friends and famiy

Lostinparis, I'm really sorry to hear you're going through this. I had a m/c at 11.5 weeks last year and passed big chunks of matter, as well as the sac, which was smaller than what you describe. I had a scan a couple of days later which indicated that there was still a lot of lining to come away. I didn't have a D&C but in retrospect wish I had, as I then went on to bleed for 2 months (including passing big clots a month after the original m/c). Of course, it is unusual to last so long; however, I would second the recommendation to ask for a scan to give you the option of a D&C, if needed and wanted. Take care at this difficult time.

Tinker · 14/06/2004 19:53

Hi lostinparis - I'm also going through a m/c (6 weeks). Crap isn't it? Hope you're ok.

gingernut · 14/06/2004 23:25

lostinparis, I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. In answer to your question, I too think it sounds like you've passed the sac. I passed the sac when I miscarried although I had a blighted ovum (where you have an empty sac) so it was very small. I was examined a few days later to check to see if the cervix was closed again (which it was). I think you should get some sort of check, either a scan or an internal, within the next few days to check that everything has come away, otherwise you will need an ERPC. Watch out for sign of infection as well (e.g. raised temp). Hopefully everything will be OK - but occasionally there is a problem so it's best to get checked out.

Tinker's right, it is crap . Look after yourself.

garysgirl · 15/06/2004 10:49

hello lostinparis,
so sorry to hear about your mc it does sound like you have passed the sac and i also agree with the others that you should get checked out, i had a mc at 11 weeks followed by a d & c (which for me had no real physical pain and very little bleeding aftrewards)however i did have an infection which was only picked up by a swab test several weeks later, so it's definatly worth getting checked out. hang in there and take care or yourself.
i also agree with th others it's very crap !

lostinparis · 15/06/2004 11:05

Thanks for all the replies - it's good to have reassurance that it is normal! I am booked for a scan tomorrow evening (I take it it is ok to have a scan before the bleeding has stopped?)

lostinparis. Yes, I was still bleeding for a while after my scan. The scan will just check that you have defnitely had a mc and that it has been complete. Take care of yourself.
