Is Badgers Parting Gifts suitable for this situation?

I hope it's not inappropriate to post this here but I wasn't sure else where this would fit. It seems like such a trivial matter compared to some of the threads on here but I do need a little advice as I am at a bit of a loss on how to deal with this tough situation.

DS's beloved pre-school teacher has sadly passed away this week after a short illness (she had only been off work for around 3 weeks). We are shocked and devastated - she was a wonderful teacher and leaves behind a young family. DS is one of the youngest in his class (he's 3.5) and was very close to her and has been asking where she is.

The school is closed for half-term but re-opens on Monday where I am sure he will pick up on the fact that something has happened, or will overhear other kids talking about what has happened. He is a little thinker, very sensitive and loves books so I was thinking of getting the Badger book after reading some threads on here but was unsure of it's suitability in this situation.

Should we even sit down and talk to him about it or wait until he comes to us or asks about her again? I don't really know what to do, it's such a difficult situation.

I would use it to explain that people die, generally when they are old and their bodies wear out, but sometimes earlier. Then just answer his questions in a matter of fact way. Explain that they are always there in our memories.

It is an excellent book and entirely suitable providing the child is old enough. 3.5 might be a bit young?

I think he will take out when he understands. It is a good way in. Unfortunately I had to tackle the huge subject of death with my 2 yr old- I was very surprised to find that a 2 yr old is capable of processing it all.

Sorry what he understands and not 'when'.

Thank you both so much for replying. I've ordered the book so will have it when/if we need it. I don't think we'll sit down and tell him before Monday..will just see how it goes at school and answer any questions as they come.

I would just answer questions as they come. Have the book in readiness.

That's the plan. Thanks for your advice.
