Hi. I lost my baby on Monday and had a scan and bloods. They took more blood today and my pregnancy hormone has gone up. I have to go back to hospital tomorrow for another scan and to see the doctor.
Can someone explain to me what is happening?? I just can't understand it and I am SICK of going to hospital.
TIA XXX

Hi spook, so sorry for you, you must be feeling pretty dreadful. Don't know if this will help or just let you know you're not alone but when I lost my first baby (at 16 wks) I was in and out of the hospital having scans every few days for a couple of weeks because they were concerned I hadn't completely cleared the placenta. It also did hurt like hell for the first week to point I couldn't really walk anywhere and then the second week was like the worst period pain ever. It was all very confusing and upsetting and only the support of DH and my fab lady GP got me through, if you need more medical explanantion ring up and ask - that's what they're there for.

spook · 21/07/2006 13:44

Thanks liquidclocks. It really really hurts now!
They don't seem to know anything to tell me which is the annoying thing.
I always find that maternity units presume that you know alot more than you do. If you don't know to ask then you would just never know.
(Only found the tea and toast room on the day I left the maternity ward with DS2 for example!! )

they would not leave you if they seriously thought it was ectopic spooks.
did they do compartive bloods, do you know what the dfferent hcg counts were?
It sounds like you've retained something and it might cause an infection?
Wednesday is too long for you to wait IMO
Hugs hugs hugs

LadyTophamHatt · 21/07/2006 14:02

Oh no spook....I'm really sorry to hear this.

I hope all these tests and scans get some answers.

Spooks - have just come back from sleep (had headache) and read your post. Have you miscarried naturally or are you waiting for a d&C? Just what you said about the pain, I actually went through labour with my first but no-one told me that would happen and I was really scared. Afterwards it turned out I should have been sent to the delivery suite for help and pain relief but the incompetent on-call gp didn't know what he was doing. If you haven't miscarried naturally yet and it hurts more than a period please get some help from your maternity dept, there's no reson to go through the physical pain along with the emotions you're dealing with right now.

Regardless of that anyway if it really does hurt unbearably you need to go to A&E as you can get infections after miscarriage that you might need treatment for like antibiotics, as well as some pain relief.

Don't wait for Wednesday - it's too far away.

ChiTownLady · 21/07/2006 16:12

Spooks - this is very raw for me but I miscarried over the weekend and went ino hospital on Monday. Tha pain was awful until I got hospital leve pain relif and then the D&C whihc was for me a welcome relief - I only had sedation not a full GA.
If it is hurting more than i period then I would definately go to see the dr again or A&E - other posters are right there is no need to go through the pain as well...
I am really thinking of you - its really really horrid xxxx

flutterbee · 21/07/2006 16:17

If they seriously thought their was an ectopic then they would have kept you in I'm sure as this happened to me and they refused to let me go home even though they admitted it was only a tiny tiny chance.

I hope that this is over for you very soon. So sad for you

spook · 22/07/2006 10:47

Oh Chitownlady-I am so so sorry for you sweetheart. I'm glad the D&C was some relief (physically)
Hi Liquidclocks and Flutterbee and Piffle and LTH.
Thanks for your neverending advice. The pain has gone a bit now but bled really heavily overnight for the first time.
I just don't know whether I'm coming or going TBH. So tearful and fell into bed at 8.30 last night
If I never see that feckin hospital again it will be too soon.

i have really hesitated about posting, spooks, because i do not want to frighten you unduly...
but on the othe hand you can't be too careful so here is what i need to say, and feel free to ignore it.

IF you have an ectopic pregnancy (i have had two, you see) then sometimes you can actually feel less pain when the bleeding really starts because the fallopian tube has broken open and there is a degree of release. that is so very dangerous you wouldn't believe it.

do you mind me asking how much you are bleeding? (really personal i know, sorry). if you are soaking a pad in an hour or less you need to call the hospital.

look, regardless, i would call the hospital anyway because while most hospitals shouldn't let you out of their sights if your pregnancy might be in the wrong place, some do. especially if there is a weekend coming up, in the middle of the summer holidays when agency staff are working who might mnot know the best practice.

i know that the last thing you want to do is go back to the hospital (believe me, i really do know) and i am probably just being too much of a worrier but even if you just called them that would be a good idea.

sorry to be such a moan. this 'not knowing' time is awful...

spook · 22/07/2006 17:29

Hi aitch71. So sorry about your experiences honey. 2 ectopics-what a horror for you
I am not bleeding anywhere near that. Now it's more like a normal period but a bit clottier.
I will see how I get on tonight and if still bleeding like this tomorrow then I promise you I'll go straight in. They've given me open access to the ward so I can just turn up any time day or night. Do get the feeling I'm being given the brush off TBH.
Thankyou for looking out for me. I really do appreciate it XXX

okay, spook. keep an eye out for chills or funny shoulder tip pains as well as that can indicate bleeding in the abdomen.
oh i soooooo sympathise with you right now... wanting it to be over but actually wanting to go back in time to the point where something, whatever it was, went a wee bit wrong and then MAKING IT OKAY. it's a very sad thing, the loss of a much-wanted pregnancy, totally gutting... thanks for your kind sympathy to me, by the way.
Just don't take a single tiny risk with yourself, though, and try to take it easy. best wishes to you and yours.

FullOfTestosterone · 22/07/2006 17:39

TMI ALERT*

Ok, I hope this doesn't freak you out...I'm just sharing my experience for information sake. I didn't know what to expect when I miscarried, and got really scared...

I bled for two days with clots, then it got better.
Two days later, I had a real sudden pain while in the highway with DH. It was so bad that I had to unbuckle the seat belt and lay down in the back. Thought I should go to A&E but decided to stop home. That's when all came out all of a sudden with some really big stuff. It was horrible and very upsetting. But 1/2 hour after it was all Ok, and with time I recovered from the experience.

I Hope you are already past the worst!

ChiTownLady · 22/07/2006 17:44

spook thanks for your thoughts...I'm not sure how preg you were i was 9.5 weeks but actually measuring 7.5 weeks - I ma sorry if this is tmi but I also had heavy bleding wih the pain peaking as everything came out 2 fairly large clots which were obv. the pain was orendous at that point - ironically like peak of labour contractions ( although I am sure it is a similar process) if you are just having bleeding and no signifiant clots then I would try to get yourself back in to get checked up as things may not be clearing of their own accord...Obv its horses for courses - i didnt want to be at home with dh and ds whilst things were going on and the main bleeding took place whilst I was hospital over about 3-4 hrs - in the d&C was pretty redundant as my body had done most of it on its own - ....
If you have any questions pls don't hesitate to ask. I had such great support last week - check my other thread on the miscarriage thread... "not sure what to expect" or something like that...
Also bear in mind I'm 6 hrs behind you in USA so feel free to post late I will be back on later...

aitch71 · 22/07/2006 17:54

oh yes, that's right chitown and fullof, i'd forgotten about that pain. (if you have ectopics you still kind of get the miscarriage pain because a lot of it is the lining of the womb coming away).
in my case it felt a lot like the first part of labour (not that i knew what that felt like at the time but happily i do now).
the doctor told me that your uterus does do some contractions to expel the lining and then when that clots of blood get to your cervix they irritate it into opening up so they can pass through. but without all the labour hormones and softening etc it can be terribly painful. i think he called it 'cervical shock', from memory. it was pretty miserable to endure, what with everything else...
i do hope that wasn't too graphic for you. it is horrible talking about linings of womb etc... any pain higher up than your uterus, though, and i'd be straight on the phone.

aitch71 · 22/07/2006 18:10

god, me again. i'm your new stalker, sorry.

i was just thinking that if the hospital hasn't yet ruled out an ectopic pregnancy then best practice dictates that they should be doing comparative hcgs every two days and scanning you based on those results. (by the way, bollocks to wednesday, that's not good enough without bloods to refer to).

from what you say here it doesn't sound like you are thinking it's an ectopic (and from what i know about these things our womens' instinct is generally right) but i just wanted to validate your feeling about being fobbed off. they certainly aren't going along with what i understand to be correct procedure for managing a suspected ectopic pregnancy.

anyway, i'll check in later to see how you are doing.

just found this thread and am now worried too like aitch and the others. I suffered a ectopic last year and are hoping you are not experiencing one too, I was left not bothered with and told to return in a week as bloods were doubling, how wrong were they. Please let us know how you are
