How long after ERCP did AF arrive?

I know there are loads of threads about this at the moment, but...
I had a missed miscarriage 5 weeks ago (9 weeks pg), after waiting a week for nature, I had an ERCP. All went smoothly, out the same day, minimal pain & bleeding for 4 days. Went back to work and suddenly hit by contraction-like pains and lots of bleeding. GP signed me off work for rest of week and gave me treatment normally used for endometriosis. Worked a treat, so much that when I forgot to take it, pain and bleeding returned with a fury. However, when I was still passing clots 2 weeks later, I went back to GP, who gave me antibiotics. This finally seemed to stop the bleeding 4 weeks after operation, but after 4 blissful symptom free days, the bleeding and peroid pains restarted - now here is the question, it being almost exactly 4 weeks since the operation, could this be AF returning, or should I return to my GP yet again? Suppose I should mention that the only time I had a regular 28 days cycle was for a few months after I started weaning DD1 (suffer from PCO).
As I'm sure lots of you can sympathise with, MC is bad enough, without it going on for weeks.
BTW although I didn't post at the time, you fellow MNers helped me through the worst of it! So thank you!

nothing of any use to say i'm afraid, but just wanted to say how sorry I am you are having to go through this.

TearsBeforeBedtime · 26/03/2006 19:49

after my mother had a miscarriage, she had her first period 3 weeks after the miscarriage (which panicked her as she didn't think it would be that soon after)(she didn't have an ERCP though). Because of the problems you have had since the ERCP I would err on the side of caution and get checked out at the GPs.

Sorry that you have had to go through this.

cece · 26/03/2006 20:02

Don't know the answer to your question but I suggest going back to GP if it starts to go on and on again or gets very heavy. Do you have an af symptoms?

I am due to have an ERCP on Friday so am hoping I don't bleed this much! Shock

babyfettle · 26/03/2006 20:16

Sorry, Cece, I hope I've not worried you too much - I promise the actual operation was easy and smooth and I think I'm a rare case who has complications following it all. Good luck with it - and not wanting to sound condescending, don't underestimate how much time you will need to recover. I thought 4 days after the operation I could cope with work, but if anything I was more emotional then, than I was when I had the scan that showed the missed miscarriage.
As for me, will make an appointment in the morning - my GP has been nothing but supportive during this whole time, so I'm sure they won't mind seeing me yet again!

I am anticipating this - on Fri when I had the scan I was pretty upset but have been much calmer over this weekend. Think it is not really going to hit me till I have the op, so steeling myself for a torid next weekend.

Knowing my luck though I will have a lot of bleeding - after dd I bled for 12-13 weeks.....

babyfettle · 26/03/2006 20:29

It is a horrible time, but I think 5 weeks later that I'm pretty much stable again (managed to stop myself doing the ultimate retail therapy and buy a new house last week, so must be more in control!). But still have odd weepy moments, especially when I see a very new baby.
Not looking forward to Sept when I would have been due, especially as DH will be in Iraq then, but fingers crossed I'll be pg again by then.

cece · 26/03/2006 20:36

LOL at buying the house, as we are doing just that. Obviously that was before the mc though....

babyfettle · 26/03/2006 20:49

That's lots to cope with at once - hope it all goes smoothly. Thank goodness we don't actually have to buy a house, but it is fun looking as long as we don't get carried away!
Good luck on Friday, hope all ok - take care.

THanks, and hope you get your bfp again soon. Smile

Just wanted to say xxx

How awful babyfettle - i don't really know what to say.
for cece, i had an ercp four weeks a ago on thursday and bled lightly for 7 days, and only had slight cramps for 2 days. It has been a very emotional time - and i don't think i am still over it. What did help hugely was getting away for a weekend. It gave me something positive to focus on after all my baby plans were blasted into space, and gave me so fantastic quality time with dh and dd, who i have probably neglected recently.

cece · 28/03/2006 14:11

Thanks mootoo,

I am surprised at how many people have had mc and ERCP op both on here and in RL.
I have not had any bleeding yet so guess I will have the ECRP as planned on Friday. Was very upset when I found out but now not sure how I feel. Doesn't seem real as haven't lost my beanie yet...

mootoo · 28/03/2006 16:56

I kept telling myself that they had made a mistake, but unfortunately they hadn't. It is a very hard time both emotionally and physically. Be patient with yourself - four weeks on and i still have the odd moment.
It is important to talk to someone - a friend, partner, husband - they need to understand how you are feeling. Someone posted a poem on her last week - it is so beautiful. I will find it for you - i don't want to quote it wrongly!

mootoo · 28/03/2006 16:57

Here it is - thanks to Rhian101:

An angel wrote in the book of life
My baby's date of birth;
Then whispered as she closed the book,
"Too beautiful for Earth."

cece · 28/03/2006 17:03

thanks, it made me cry Sad very lovely

babyfettle · 04/04/2006 20:14

Cece, just wondering how it all went last Friday - I was thinking of you. I'm sorry I haven't posted until now, DD came down with chicken pox last week, so it all got a bit hectic. Thankfully it was only a mild case as it was her 2nd birthday on Saturday.

I've been made another appointment with the gyneacologist after yet another trip to my GP, but it probably won't be for another 2 weeks. 6 weeks on after the ERCP and still having spotting shouldn't really be happening- so frustrating. I do hope that your experience is better than mine.

babyfettle

Thanks for asking. All went as well as it could do on Friday. Was in and out of the hospital within a morning. It wasn't as bad as I imagined but still felt tearful.

I seem to have been lucky and only had very minimal spotting since and only one short episode of period like pains on Sunday afteroon. The only pain I have been getting is when my bladder is full! Not sure if it is bruised or have an infection. They recommended a check up with GP 6 weeks after the op.

Been feeling tearful on and off. On the whole though carrying on as normal and trying to keep busy. It is only when I stop and think about the baby I have lost that I get upset Sad

babyfettle · 04/04/2006 21:09

Glad all is going well. Keeping busy is definately the best option, although I found it quite difficult those first few days. I still have odd moments of tears, particularly when I see a young baby, but fingers-crossed we'll both have that ourselves soon!Smile

Yes play group this morning was a bit difficult as there was a 3 week old baby there.

I hope to get pg again but have to talk to DH. This one was an accident but now all I want to be is pg again!

babyfettle · 05/04/2006 13:59

Funny - that's the same with us. It wasn't an accident as such, but we weren't really trying, so it came out of the blue much quicker than we thought and I wasn't entirely ready for it. But now all I want is to be pg again - so my hormones definitely got a kick! Just hope we get the ok soon that everything is sorted out and we can start ttc again.

OP posts:
cece · 05/04/2006 14:37

Have started to bleed today. 5 days after the op! Do you think this is normal? Not really heavy but enough to need to change pads....

Yes we were using a rather unreliable form of contraception - the doctor we saw at A&E laughed when we told him. Told us it was like using nothing!

babyfettle · 05/04/2006 15:44

That's exactly what happened to me - minimal bleeding then 5 days later, really heavy, with quite bad pain.

I went to see my GP, who said that she wouldn't send me for a repeat scan just yet, as she quite rightly thought the EPU was the last place I wanted to be at that time. But she did prescribe some pills called mefenamic acid, which can be used for heavy or painful periods. Really worked well for me and slowed the bleeding down and stopped the pain. I had to take them for about 10 days, but when the pain and bleeding still hadn't stopped, they gave me some antibiotics in case I had a low-grade infection. May be worth going back to see your GP, if it gets worse. I do hope you're not going to have the same problems as me.
take care

Thanks, I will keep an eye on it. Not too heavy at mo and no pain so will wait and see what happens next!
