Four months ago, a very close friend of mine was murdered in a bottle attack in a nightclub in London. You may have heard about it in the papers at the time- it was during a Blackberry promotional event at which Jessie J was performing. His name was Phil Sherriff and he was a husband and father of two young children aged five and eight. You can imagine the devastation that his death has wreaked on his family.

His wife Jane is runnning a campaign to ban the sale of alcohol in glass containers in nightclubs and venues with a late licence. Phil's death was entirely preventable, and it is her wish that no other mum should have to go through what she is going through.

Please take the time to visit her campaign page at:

www.facebook.com/bottlestopnow

There is more information there about her family and husband and how you can help. Please sign the petition and share the link with your friends.

Jane's life and family have been torn apart. Her children are without her father, it is likely that the youngest will barely remember him. Please help Jane in her campaign to stop this happening to any other mother.

I'll certainly sign. It's sad that glasses etc in night clubs etc need to be plastic but I totally agree they should be.

I'll share the fb page too.

Sorry for your loss.

Thank you- the BBC report in his death with Jane's statement is here:

All murders are pointless.

But you cannot ban everything

FB campaigns tend to go the way of vigilantism.

EatingSwansHorror · 19/08/2012 22:51

Yeah, because vigilantism against glass bottles is really serious?? How ridiculously, absurdly inappropriate Hoops. Have signed petition.

I'm very sorry for your loss OP. I remember that attack being on the news. It was horrible.
However your friend was not murdered because glass was available. Glass was the means used to express the violence that is endemic in our society and that is fuelled in part by excessive alcohol consumption. Banning glass in nightclubs will not remove the risk of attacks in that setting. I can appreciate the despair your friend must feel but sadly I don't think the measure she suggests will do what she hopes.

Normandob · 19/08/2012 23:19

Thanks for the support those that have signed it is appreciated. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the possibility of death or serious injury through broken glass being used as a weapon. It won't eradicate violence of course but if it can prevent the type of injuries occurring that Phil and others have suffered then isn't it worth the debate at least?

How dreadful. I have no Idea about this attack what were the circumstances?

I agree and will Happily sign the petition.

Have linked to this thread on AIBU, hopefully will get more traffic there, although it is a place for debate and there will be a mix of opinions. Hope that's ok normandob.

Normandob · 20/08/2012 07:46

Hi Yelps- I don't want to say too much about the circumstances as the trial isn't until October but if you google Philip Sherriff you can find what is already out there.

Thanks Clare, appreciate it. The more publicity the better, we're prepared for the fact that not everyone will agree!
