HELP-any success with anger management???

My DS (7) is having severe anger outbursts that are excacerbated by stress/tiredness/hunger and sometimes just ignite with very little cause. He seems an anxious, very bright, low impulse control boy.
I have a Psych background and can see what is going on but found little use for the many strategies already tried. Does anyone have a tried and tested method that really helps? Or perhaps been on a practical course that helps. Please take the time to jot a few things down. Anger is spoiling our lives and we are .desperate for help. The next step is a Psychiatrist but I have little faith in the medical approach.

Does he get angry in all situations, just at home or just at school? Are the episodes triggered by other children goading him, frustration, inability to get his own way? My son, for example, used to get extremely angry and upset if he couldn't manage to do something. The solution there was to keep drumming it into him to 'ask for help' - it's taken a while but he's much better at it now. If you can eliminate fatigue and low blood-sugars with plenty of sleep, regular meals/snacks and a healthy diet then you may be able to reduce the episodes to 'stress' and then give him techniques to manage stress.

Thank you for that guidance. He is frustrated at school and is currently falling out with his peers. However, he doesn't act out at school at all.
I think he needs more time with me to make him feel special too.
