Infacol/gripewater stupid question

Hi
My ds has bad gas early in the morning and often won't settle because he needs to do a couple of massive farts due to all the gas built up in his system.

I have tried infacol and gripewater which he hated the taste of both.
They didn't really work not bringing up any gas at all. And I can hear it rumbling in his tummy!
My silly question is does infacol and gripewater take a couple of days to work or does it work immediately? Just wondering whether to perserve or ditch them.
I have just bought colief and will try this tonight.
Thanks

Hello! How old is your ds? A gassy tum is a very common gripe for infants as their digestive systems are so new and inexperienced. My dd was very much troubled by wind but the infacol did seem to help her within about 15 mins of a feed. The problem starts with the baby taking in big gulps of air as they swallow, so you could try rubbing and gently tapping his back after each feed. He might also take in wind if he sucks on your fingers or anything like that - you can't prevent it unfortunately! I've found that lying my ds on his tummy about half an hour after each feed had helped him bring up quantities of wind, too. It might be worth asking the doc to check his tummy too and ask their advice. Good luck!

He is 8 weeks old almost 9, I am hoping he will grow out of it soon, compared to everyone's else wind problems it doesn't seem that bad, just upsetting as he really wants to sleep he's just too uncomfortable to do it.
I did give him some tummy time this afternoon and this seemed to bring up a bit of wind, I'll try it after every feed now!

Glad tummy time works a bit Remember not to put him on his tum too soon after a feed or you'll see the feed again! The poor little things get so distressed by wind - I seem to remember 8/9 weeks was a particularly troublesome time for my two. It's so tough when you're in the thick of it. It might help to carry him in a sling if he won't settle at all in his cot or pram. Good luck again - I'm thinking of you!

beach - When I thought it wasn't working my MW told me that Infacol does take a day or two to start fully working (I think it has to get fully through the system), she was right and within a few days later her wind improved.

That being said I know friends who say it didn't help their DC at all, those I know who have tried Colief have said its very good - I'm always put off by the price though

My cousin was told recently she could get colief on prescription for her DS. It is v expensive so be good if all docs will prescribe it.

We never used it for DS as he was BF and it has to be pre-mixed with milk. Infacol did the job mostly though he hated it

Check with your HV as advice may have changed but when my DD (now nearly 6) was tiny she had horrendous colic and I was told that you can use gripe water, colief and infacol at the same time as they all work in different ways and on different areas of the gut.

Probably owrht looking into baby massage as well as that can help to relax their muscles and get the wind moving in the right direction!

Colief has worked wonders for my 8 wk old - she's been on it since 3 or 4 weeks. The HV told me I could have it on prescription, I just rang the docs and asked for it, saying HV had requested they prescribe - they didn't even ask which HV!

I am BFing so it's a pain in the neck expressing (I put the drops in about half an oz of milk and give from a bottle) , but it's worth it. Am giving her the odd bit of gripe water as well now as she has been more "windy" again the last week, but nothing like she was.

Sorry, I also meant to say that Infacol and Colief both seemed to work pretty quickly, though Dentinox did nowt (apart from make her smell of gherkins ) and I think she might just like the taste of gripe water!

A warm bath seems to really help, if she's crying from windy discomfort a bath cheers her right up. We've got one of those bucket-style ones where they are right underwater up to the chin, might be worth a try for him?

Hi - with my DD it took na couple of days for the Infacol to be really effective - the HV explained that it has a cumulative effect, so you have to persever for a little while before you see much benefit. Don't know if this is generally the case, but that's the way it worked for us.

Our baby was very windy for the first couple of months but thn it got loads better. Now we are stopping using Infacol (she's 6 months old) with no bad effects. I think we could have stoipped earlier, but we did ty at about 4 months and she seemed quite colicky, so we started Infacol again.

Hope that helps.

Would definitely recommend Colief. Ended up in tears one day in the pharmacy as NOTHING worked for my DS - he was by now 4 months old - and they suggested we try it for a few weeks.

It did take a week or so to "kick in" but we had a different child altogether. Life saver!

Was on it until he was around 10 months though.

Thanks guys,
am still using the infacol and he does seem to bring up random burps every now and then, he hates the taste of it though and screams every time i give it to him. Will give it another day or two and see if it is effective.
I gave him loads of tummy time, cycled his legs and sat him up a lot yesterday and he was better last night, still woke up but did a fart and went back to sleep.
Also we have stopped swaddling him which has let him move a bit more in his moses basket and i think this might help him release some wind.
The colief is for lactose intolerance and I'm not sure that is his problem as apart from a little bit of early morning gas he is such a good baby.
but if the infacol doesn't work I'll give it a shot. It's such a trial and error process!

We have been using infacol now for two weeks and it does seem to be making his wind better.

Also we both had thrush! and this was effecting his latch and he was gulping loads which was making him windy. Now that has almost cleaered up his wind has got a lot better, not gone completely though.
