Yes it can be linked because they tend to gulp and swallow a lot to ease the pain of the reflux. They are constantly swollowing back the acid which hurts them even more, poor baby. Reflux is awful for them. Is he on a special diet or any medication for it?

Sorry didn't explain myself well there at all! I meant they tend to swallow a lot of air and get wind because of the gulping.

Yes, that makes sense meandjoe.
He is on gaviscon and ranitadine. He's bfed.

My DS has silent reflux and bad wind although much better now he's older. is it bottom wind? As this is caused by digestion then it's probably something he's getting through your milk. In my case it was cows milk - so I cut out all dairy.

Best thing really is to give him tummy time - helps get the bum wind out (although my DS didn't like it much because of reflux). Also pumping legs and doing tummy massage etc. I also used to wind after every feed for 20-30 mins by rubbing (not patting).

It does get better but it's hard seeing them in pain and discomfort

I am sure you've already been told this but have you lifted up his cot or raised his moses basket at one end so his head is always 30 degrees above his tummy to stop acid from burning him.

Also I've heard swaddling helps soothe them a lot during a bad wind or reflux attack but my ds HATED being swaddled or restricted in any way so it doesn't work for them all.

Have you tried gripe water for the wind or infacol? I found dentinox drops really good for bringing up wind.

Other than tummy massage, I don't know what else you can do. He should grow out of it soon but it's sooo hard to watch your baby in so much pain.

Sorry can't be of more help. It's awful having an unsettled straining baby.

My DD2 was exactly the same (now 12 months). The wind in my DD2's case was caused partly by temporary lactose intolerance and partly by my diet - I never figured out really whether she was crying because of reflux pain or tummy pain so I just treated both - I bought Biocare Lactase Enzyme liquid and put 4 drops on her tongue half way through each breastfeed - this helps break down lactose in breastmilk. The problem with a windy crampy baby with reflux is that all the straining makes the baby reflux alot more so you have to treat both. I followed a really bland dairy free diet for the first five months of breastfeeding and that improved DD2's reflux so much she didn't need medication. I had to avoid all fruit, veg, caffeine, dairy, eggs and anything vinegary or spicy - just ate tuna jacket potatoes and honey on toast etc. She slept on an incline at night (on an AR pillow). And she was in a reclining baby chair when not asleep. Sometimes she would have a windy tummy anyway, particularly straining and wiggling whilst feeding and I used to massage her tummy or, believe it or not, pat her firmly on the bottom! Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.
I am off dairy - nearly two weeks now.
ALso trying Colief and something seems to have helped in te last 36 hrs. He has been sleeping for a few 2 hr streches. Very hard to settle him though and this evening he keeps waking up after 10 mins and it takes an hour to get hi over. Still an improvement though.
It is a constant struggle, tbh.
No chance of getting him in a cot or anything even raised, but look forward to theat in the future!

My ds has silent reflux too and yes he did have a problem with a windy tummy- especially in the morning. I've also cut out dairy, carbonated drinks, spices and gassy or acidic fruit and veg. I think that this has really helped (although it did take a couple of weeks) along with gaviscon and carrying him for most of the day in an upright sling. I get a lot of comments about this as he is a heavy baby but the back ache is so much less distressing than the screaming. Good luck
