hypertonic baby

I have just come back from six week check with DD, they have said she is hypertonic and will need to see a consultant.

Does anyone know what this could lead to? If she will have long term problems / handicaps etc?

I had too many things going through my mind to actually ask what it meant?

my dd had/has hypotonia, I expect you'll get a physio referral pretty quickly, it can lead to not being able to sit/late wlaking, low strength
My dd was fine and still is fine, the physio helps immensely, it led to a minor gross motor delay which at 34 mths dd is now catching up on herself and is epected not to have any permanent problems from the hypotonia
pls ask away, its worth searching the archives as I recall another mum asking this a few months back too?
My dd has a syndrome which causes her hypotonia
Try not to worry, they can do wonders these days and with such an early diagnosi and intervention you are getting the best start on it
Hugs

Thanks for getting back so soon Piff.

Both me & DH feel sick with worry. DD was not breathing at birth and had GBS, we thought she was doing ok until she had a cold last week.

Still can't think straight to ask anymore questions? Will probabaly think of somemore later, will try to find the other thread aswell.

We went to see the consultant yesterday and DD has got to have a cranial ultrasound, abdominal ultrasound, blood tests and be referred to a pysiotherapist. I know I should be grateful that they are doing something but can't help feeling sad.

She was born with cord round her neck and body and had GBS.

All I keep getting asked is did you have any problems, then when I say I think I leaked the day before labour and got it checked out but was sent home they don't say anything at all.

Sorry just ranting - as they say better out than in.

Thakyou.I just feel totally down in dumps about it. Everybodys saying things like 'she will be ok','probably find it's nothing' etc etc.

All i want to do is go to Cyprus, see my mum and cry with her for a bit - I know she'll be doing exactly same as I'm doing over here.

Not completely sure, the consultant said she is away for three weeks but it sounded like they should be done before she comes back. For the physio we have to fill in a questionairre first.

I can never think to ask questions when I'm there, it's either that or I don't want to know answers!!

my daughter has hypotonia but it wasnt picked up until she was about 18 months old. Physio really helps. It usually mean they will just be later with their gross motor skills. Your dd is still very very young. it is good they are investigating so quickly as if there is a problem early intervention will help. Try not to worry. i have been there myself with my daughter though. She had the cranial ultrasound when she was a baby. It is painless though and very quick. please dont worry xx

i think we are all afraid to ask sometimes also

shorty3 · 01/09/2005 13:05

Thankyou. xx

Just fed her now and feel a little better now.

Good idea about the notebook - will get one at the weekend.
