13 month old only eating fruit

Our DD has always been a great eater, tries new food and meal times have always been fun.

Last couple of days it has all gone wrong, she is refusing to eat anything and throws her food on the floor.

My husband is an ex michelin starred chef and food and family meal times are very important to us as a family. Today we found ourselves doing what we said we would never do. DD wandering around with us tring to get her to have a mounthful...just one...

She is fine in herself with loads of energy, but of course she is waking at 1am screaming for milk. I cant remember the last time I fed her in the night, months and months ago.

Any ideas any one, or shall we just go with the flow!

I think, if it's a recent thing, you should go with the flow and try to ignore the food-throwing. She could be teething or have a sore throat... lots of little things can interfere with appetite. She could just be trying to get her favourite food (babies are small but they're smart). Obviously you know that getting anxious, pleading and following her around with food probably isn't helping. Try to stay very relaxed in a 'we're all enjoying our lovely dinner and if you don't want it, it's your loss' nonchalent kind of a way.

A 'carby' snack just before bedtime with some milk might give help everyone get more sleep.

Thanks Chil. I think that is great advice, trying to go with the flow...I just worry, but I am sure she wont stave herself.

She has just had a whole bottle of milk and DH is trying to get her to GO TO SLEEP! It is 7.15 here, her normal bedtime.

Nap time and bedtime have been a bit of a battle lately, but I was putting that down to the heat.

When DS was about the same age we had a week when all he would eat was tangerines and breadsticks. I just went with it (although I was fairly worried at the time) and lo and behold a week later things went back to normal. Babies are weird. fact.

My DD is like that. One week all she ate was fruit, and hardly any of that, but she was absolutely fine. There is no point trying to force her, she will eat when she's ready. As itstheyearzero says, babies are weird.

How strange, as I said DD has always been a great eater. We must be going through a strange phase too. What do you suggest I do, keep giving the fruit she wants? or Keep giving normal meals and ignore her?

Normally DD goes to nursery every day as DH and I both work full time. We both have 2 months off work now, school holidays. Do you think she finds the change of routine hard? She has been at nursery since she was 7.5 months, but with Easter Holidays, fiesta breaks along the way.

It is upsetting me alot that she prefers nursery! I know I am proberbly being silly, as she is so happy during the day, its just the eating.

If I were you I would keep offering her normal meals (she will probably throw them all on the floor/look at you as if you are mad for offering such stuff). If she won't eat them, just give her what she wants, it won't hurt her to eat fruit for a few days, plus she will soon get bored of it. It's a phase...she will go through many, many more. My DS is now 19 months and has always loved fromage frais. This week however he looks at it as though it is poison! Oh and don't get me started on the tuna sandwiches. ...

PS Are you in the UK? The heat may also be a factor. DS has lost his appetite a bit over the last week or so, it's got to be because it's so warm he just doesn't feel like eating.

Chica31 · 03/07/2010 22:10

No I'm not in UK, I'm in Spain. It's not too hot at the moment, though all the fireworks, WE WON, will keep us all from sleeping tonight.

I think Dh and I have finally got used to the heat this year, it was 37 this afternoon, so I guess it is really hot!
