Could more experienced parents please tell me how differently their DC developed (i.e. at different rates etc?)

and I know this sounds ridiculous, as of course they are all going to develop at their own rate but having nothing else/ no one else to compare my dc to,(none of our friends have started having babies yet and all family members babies are younger) Im probably doing what I shouldnt and comparing them to eachother.

DS is only just gone 5 months and dd is 4years and 9 months.

DS is an adorable baby - of course they all are but he definately is showing, already, a very gentle and placid personality and is overall a very happy, "easy" baby. He is no trouble at all, once hes full, clean and kissed alot hes happy as larry and is almost constantly smiling. This child only cries if there is something wrong.

DD, like all babies was gorgeous too - a little dote but, and possibly more down to me i.e. her being PFB, a little harder. She suffered terribly from wind and reflux and has a personality more like mine - a little fussy and particular and determined - shes very funny.

Anyway, I dont know if its personality difference (i.e. ds being so laid back I really dont think he could be arsed and dd the opposite (whatever that is)), the difference between boys and girls or the difference in our parenting (as was very uptight with dd) or simply just nothing at all to even be concerned about but I suppose Im just looking for others experiences with more than one DC/ reassurance/ advice:

DD definately developed faster than ds. She was sitting completely unaided at 16 weeks and was saying mama and dada at 5 months. She was very active in general.

DS isnt doing any of this but Im not sure what he "should" be doing - maybe am just sounding like a youngish, inexperienced mother. That said, if I didnt have dd to compare him with I wouldnt have any concerns at all but it slightly makes me worry because I do compare - hes definately found his voice - babbles and oohs and ahhs loads, laughs outloud, can pick up his teether etc and put in his mouth, holds toys, can put the rings on this toy we have and take them off, can roll completely over from on the back position to on his tummy etc..

Does this sound ok? Im sorry for sounding so ignorant? Im being silly, arent I?

You're not being silly, but then again you are. We had a similar comparison problem and let me assure you that it all turned out fine. In fact, DS is eclipsing his sister in some skills (even if she did roll at 3 weeks and he didn't until he was 11.5m!... and so on).

Enjoy the differences. It sounds like your DD was fairly early with most things so that your DS might appear behind even if he's not.

He sounds perfectly fine to me I have 3 DS's and they have all been different
DS1 crawled at 11 months, walked at 14 months, apoke late, rode bike at 6.5
DS2 crawled at 9 months, walked at 11 months, talked and never shuts up, ride bike at 4
DS3 crawled at 10 months, walked at 13 months, talks when he feels like it

So they are all different and he sounds fine and you sound like you are worrying over nothing

Thank you think I knew I was probably being silly - but needed to be told!

All new mams worry! but ask your health visitor that's what they are there for.

DS crawled at 10 months, talked at 13 months and walked at 18 months.

DD crawled at 8 months, walked at 13 months and at 22 months is only just starting to talk ''properly'. I keep getting freaked out when I hear a little girls voice as I'm not used to her talking yet .

dinkystinky · 01/07/2010 21:28

Sounds fine to me too. DS1 and DS2 look like carbon copies of each other (nearly 3 years between them) but whereas DS1 was placid easy going baby (and still is as 4 year old) - crawled at 8 months, walked at 15 months, talked at 16 months - DS2 is desperate to do everything his big brother is doing so crawled at just over 6 months, walking well at a year, talking when he wants to (he finds just taking stuff is more effective) by 15 months.

he sounds fine!
my ds is 6.5 months and not doing all of the things you mentioned, he is also very laid back, im not really worried as ds1 took his time in most things too, they will all do it @ their own pace and yours doesn't even sound behind average anyway, so relax

He sounds fine. Your daughter was a pretty early developer, I'd say.
