4yo DD does stuff upside down and backwards!

My 4yo DD (pre school year) has learnt her sounds and can write her name, this seems pretty much in line with her co-nursery pupils.

However, very often when not being watched doing it, she will instinctively write her name backwards and/or upside down.. Her writing "style", if a 4yo can have such a thing, is quite a distinctive arabic/hieroglyphic(sp?) script. You can make out the letters but they are very fancily written

She is also a bit of a jigsaw fanatic - has been since 2, and more often than not also does the jigsaws upside down and if I show her the picture to try and see that it is a certain way up or for us to work out where a piece goes, she shuns the picture and just carries on (at quite a pace!) putting the puzzle together upside down.

Anyone with similar experience? Is this something I should get checked out before she starts Reception in September?

Quite normal. Lots of children this age write backwards. She'll grow out of it soon enough

My DD1 is the same, she's left handed too. Her pre school teacher told me that its very common and even more common in left handers.

It's absolutely fine and normal - she's advanced to be writing her name and knowing her sounds before she goes to school!
As long as she's enthusiastic and happy with her writing, she'll work it out in her own time.

Thank you all for your answers - I have never made any deal out of it, she is only 4 and yes, I am just pleased that she has shown an interest in letters and writing and stuff.

I just wondered if this might mean her spacial awareness was a bit "off centre" or something, and with her starting Big School, it might become an issue.

However, to hear that lots of children her age do it goes a long way to putting my mind at rest!
