Probably PFB: tv at 9 weeks?

DD when awake often sits in my lap facing out. I tend to have the tv on for background noise, and to entertain me while she sleeps on my lap. Can she see the tv at this age?(9 weeks), and will it aversely affect her? - I know there is some rule - no tv before 18months I think? - but when does this rule start?

It won't do her any harm - don't worry!

There is no rule!

I don't know if she will be able to see it, but my DS (6 months) has always been fascinated by computer type screens (he's staring now as I type). I wouldn't let him 'watch' TV for any length of time but I'm sure short periods of having a screen within sight won't do him any harm.

It won't do her any harm. We all watch too much TV in this house and DS (23mo) is bright as a button, no harm done here

It's completely fine. We don't have tv but dd used to watch us both playing computer games and watching dvds so much the same effect. I think the guidelines aren't there so much because tv will rot their brains as to stop people using tv as a babysitter.

As far as I understand it, the issue with too much tv when they are very young is with potential delays to language development.

Now, I have always let dd watch a small amount of tv. She's 2.2 and her language is advanced for her age (she has just said an 8 word sentence to me). I'm guessing that children with delayed language development due to too much tv watching have been plonked in front of the tv and not much else.

All things in moderation. Also, obviously I only let her watch age appropriate things. I really wouldn't worry too much about it at 9 weeks as long as you are also spending time talking face to face with them etc.
