Just that really, trying to work out if DS1 is ahead, behind or average!

Ds1 couldn't write for the first couple of years of school so was probably about 6yrs old when he was able to have a go at spelling tests.

Ds2 learned to sound out and start spelling basic words in Reception (so 4 or 5yrs old). He had little or no interest in reading before starting school.

Both boys do well in spelling tests so the starting age doesn't seem to have been all that important tbh.

DS is bilingual and learned recognising all the alphabet in English and the numbers in both languages when he was 2, and spelled his name a few months after. He was able to read some words too. I did not teach that to him but had to stop talking about this to others as they were implying that I was a pushy mum.
Then a couple of months ago, he lost his interest to spelling and letters etc. Now he is 3 and he rarely spells words except his name phonetically which he learned in nursery. When it comes to pen and paper he is really bad and let alone writing he is not even drawing anything except baloons.
I'm sure that he would learn reading and writing if we tried to help him a bit but I did not think that it was necessary at all. A Child Development Paediatrician friend of mine told me not to teach anything non functional for child's age. I kind of agree to that.

The day my DS started play group at 2 years he wrote the names of all of the Thomas the tank engine characters in plastic letters. To the amazement of the staff. Ive never tried to teach him anything.
