Feeling really really down. My DD2 is 2 stone 3 lbs and only 12 months old. She is really fat and she no longer fits into size 6 nappies. Where do i get bigger nappies???

Fiona - telling her to be proud may just end up brushing over the fact that there may be underlying issues. Far better to say that, wow, that is heavy for her age, and if OP is worried, she should talk to a medical professional.

silverfrog · 29/06/2010 07:33

My bigger than average 5 year old fits into size 6s. She weighs about 22kg I think. I have managed with a size 5 on occasion, but containment not as good...

Washables may well work, but haven't gone that route myself (used them when dd1 was under 18kg, but haven't bought extra large sizes)

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/06/2010 07:35

I think the main reason why they don't fit is that although your older children and OP's weigh the same or older children weigh more the height is completely different and so to the wight distribution.

NoahAndTheWhale · 29/06/2010 07:45

I suppose if baby is younger and shorter then the nappies are less likely to fit as there is more tummy to fit it.

2 stone sounds a lot but it is 28lb and I remember babies weighing that sort of amount when DS was little (ie he was getting weighed). It isn't much help to the OP to know how much other people's children weigh at older ages and what size of nappies they have as they aren't having the same issues.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 29/06/2010 07:49

If she's breastfed, she's within the percentiles and she's always been heavy and tall for her age (you said she was off the charts at birth) there's no need to worry about her weight. The percentile graphs describe a distribution of weights/heights across all babies; somebody has to be at the top and somebody at the bottom.

Ignore your HV, OP.

No advice about the nappies, but I wanted to jump in and try and head off some of the obesity panic.

I don't think it's particularly helpful comparing much older children to my 1 year old. I have no doubt that my 4.5year old would fit comfortably into a size 5 nappy - but she's 25cm taller and the weight is distributed differently. The issue is DD2's massive stomach and thunder thighs. I can get a pampers baby dry size 6 or an Active fit 5+ on her but it looks SO uncomfortable because it cuts right into her under her tummy and across her legs and she constantly has sore-looking scratches on the tops of her thighs where the sharp sticky tab keeps digging in. I called a couple reusable nappy companies and they recommended Real Easy nappies that do an extra large size.

Without searching for dd1 red book, I couldn't tell you specific age/weights.

I do take the point about weight distribution etc, but dd1 shot off the scales as a baby, and has now spent a long time slowly readjusting. It's as though she spent the first 18 months growing, and is now concentrating on the rest!

Eg can't remember happy sizes, but I know for a fact she has only just past winter grown put of trousers we had to get her at 18 months to fit around all her chub. That's 4 years! So she would easily have been in size 5/6 nappies at that age and younger - don't remember as used mostly Washables, but did use disposables for holidays etc.

The nature baby ones always seemed to be odd sizes to me - much bigger than others

toccatanfudge · 29/06/2010 07:59

my DS3 was 11kg at 8 months, by 2 1/2yrs he was 16kg (found his red book this morning and so was obviously quite a way off with my first post says he was 15kgs ). He had thighs like tree trunks I know I didn't start using the size 6's until he was around 2.

Perhaps try pull-ups? Then the tabs won't dig in

Thank you all. Sorry for abit of cross-posting there - was abit mift to read all the fat-bashing that was posted lastnight.
I agree it is a temporary problem of weight distribution which is why I slightly hesitate in purchasing reusables because I'm sure when she gets moving or when she lengthens abit more her shape will change. I think I will try some different brands first - didn't think of supermarket own brands. Have tried Boots and wilkos own brand but found them too tight.

I found pampers really bad for babies with a round bum. Watching with interest as DD2 (5months) is already in 4+ size nappy with massive tighs.
I had to finish DD1, 91% so not that big, with pull ups for night for bigger kids (4?), when she was 2.

mamaloco · 29/06/2010 08:36

BTW DD2 is 9 kg at just 5 months, off the charts, and I have been accused of force feeding her (i.e. putting flour or sugar in her bottle ) it is really hard. don't go down on the OP. She asked about nappies not how you were about her DD's weight.
DD1 was on drynight napppies.

It is hard not to feel criticised as people are always very surprised by a top centiler. There is a big weight difference between the averagers and the top liners, if you have a little baby/child it can be utterly shocking. My niece is 2.6 and weighs less than my dd did at 6 months for example. But try and remember that if the height and weight are in proportion then chances are your child is fine, just looks chubby due to lack of movement.

As I said already, my dd was a similar size. She was 26lbs before we started her on anything other than breastmilk (and she was only 7lbs 12oz at birth). She shot up from the 50th to off the charts within a few weeks. She is in proportion though and always was. It was starting to move that made the difference. And her 2nd year she put on only a few pounds really compared to the 22lbs or whatever she gained in 12 months. She's perfectly healthy, in proportion and so ridiculously strong she puts her Mum to shame.

FionaSH · 29/06/2010 09:17

Pleased to see more sensible posts on here about the weight issue the reason the growth charts show different centiles is because babies aren't all 'average'. My 7mo is 13kg and I'm roud of his thunder thighs!!! Obviously going to be a rugby player (although if he chooses ballet, we'll support him... May have the nappy problem with tights tho...

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/06/2010 09:32

DD is 6 months old and in size 4 pampers. No idea how much she weighs though as I havent had her weighed since she was about 8 weeks old.

OP, try pull-ups because as some posters have said they havent got tags to dig in the your DD's thighs.

SuperAmoo · 10/07/2010 13:32

I'm having some success with Pampers size 6 easy ups. They're not exactly perfect - have to change them often as I don't find them very absorbant but they do have a lot more stretch around the hips and tummy and my DD2 is alot more comfy these days. She's also started crawling so I'm hoping she'll start to slim down a bit and more nappies might fit her.
