Is it okay for 2 little boys to share a bed...

Just moving into our new home and cant decide on the boys sleeping arrangements.

I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. They are too small for a bunk bed and their room would look too cogested for two single beds.

Is it okay for them to be a in a double bed and for how long. we currently rent and they are in a double bed and seem to be all smiley with each other when they wake and sleep?

I would like other peoples views

thanks

My three regularly sleep in the eldest's bed for fun. They snuggle up and have a brilliant time doing so.

Having said that, it's not terribly practical in the following scenarios:

  1. Bedwetting
  2. Illness
  3. Nightwakings
  4. Sleepovers/playdates

If it suits you, go for it.

BertieBotts · 27/06/2010 23:35

Could you get one of those triple bunk beds, which has a double bed on the bottom and a single on the top - then they can share for now, but one can move up to the separate bed if/when they want to.

Nothing wrong with siblings sharing a bed at all. I think it's a lovely thing for them

Lovely article about "sibling beds" on Elizabeth Pantley's website

Yes is it's absolutely fine for the time being. They are so young and will probably enjoy it.

As they get a bit bigger then obviously they'll mant a bit of space but I don't think you have to worry about that for a while.

abdnhiker · 28/06/2010 08:05

We've put DS2 in a toddler bed because we could fit that and DS1's single in his room. But no problem sharing a bed (aside from wriggling issues but it sounds like your two are okay that way).

serenity · 28/06/2010 08:26

Until we (finally!) moved last year I had three children in one bedroom in a triple bunk. DS1(11 at the time) and Ds2(9 at the time) shared the double at the bottom and DD slept at the top. There were no issues although we were just about getting to the point where we were going to have to rethink it (essentially me and DH having a sofa bed in the living room so DSs could have our room)

At 2 and 4 I can't see a problem at all, unless they mess about and stop each other sleeping!

rattling · 29/06/2010 09:24

Was about to post the same question - have twin boys in cots at the moment, bunkbeds eventually, but was wondering whether this would do when they were too big for cots but too little for a top bunk. (No room for 2 singles)

I hadn't considered bedwetting!

tinierclanger · 29/06/2010 14:05

What you could do is get the sort of bunk beds that can be separated, that are full size singles. Then you could get zip and link mattresses and push them together for a double, and then reconfigure as bunk beds when they're older, to give more space in the room.

Or is that over-complex?

It sounds lovely for them to sleep together, although as others have mentioned I guess potentially a slight problem with wet beds and sick nights...?

Oblomov · 29/06/2010 14:26

of course its fine. saddened that you need to ask. but why would a 2 and a 4 yr old to too samll for bunk beds ? thta doesn't make sense.

verycherry · 29/06/2010 20:58

My big boys had bunks but slept in one bed together until they were about 8+6 - their choice, all fine never a prob with anything.

They are 16+14 now, still in bunks, but most def do not share and detest sharing a room....

monkeyfacegrace · 29/06/2010 21:03

Ive just had custom made bunkbeds done for my 3 yr old and 18mnth old. They are toddler bed sized, so mattress is 160cm x 70cm, but they are only 130cm tall so very safe. Made of solid pine, and only £160 delivered. Gave me masses of space in their room for them to play!
Let me know if you want details x

domesticsluttery · 29/06/2010 21:06

My two are now 6 and nearly 8, but they went into bunk beds at 2 and 4.

I still find them asleep in the same bed quite frequently though, if they've been chatting and fallen asleep

BigMommaOfAlmost4 · 30/06/2010 12:02

DTS (age 8) always sleep in the same bed, even though they have two separate ones . We have given up moving them back to their own beds as they are too heavy now!

I see absolutley no problem with it. In fact we wish we'd never bothered with two single beds as a double bed would be better for them. DH and his brother (1 yr older) used to share a bed until they were about 12/13 so maybe it's genetics but that was because they were poor!! It's actually lovely to see them curled up together after they've been fighting and calling each other names all day .

wahwahwah · 30/06/2010 12:10

A trundle bed? one of those ones that is a single bed with another one that rolls underneath (the legs fold down). they bottom bed is easy to pull out and pop up so you could use it at night and pop away during the day.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 30/06/2010 12:15

Ds almost 6 and dd 2.5 share a double (well 2 singles pushed together) they won't sleep any other way

SydneyB · 30/06/2010 12:19

monkeyfacegrace - I'd love those details please! Hoping to put nearly 2 yr old and nearly 4 yr old in bunks.

jennymac · 30/06/2010 13:46

I think it is fine for kids to share a double bed (although the bed wetting might be a problem). I understand your reticence over the bunk beds though. My nearly 4yr old is the most active sleeper in the world and even with the side part thing, I would never feel easy about her sleeping on the top bunk. Shame though as everytime we talk about moving to our new house she keeps saying how she would love bunk beds!

BooKangaWonders · 30/06/2010 13:57

we have the 'shorty' bunk beds from Argos - the top is below my shoulder height, so not a problem for my 3 yr old. Wouldn't like the really high ones, though

sparkle1977 · 30/06/2010 15:16

Very interested in this thread as I have 2 DS's who are 2 and 3.9 and would like to put them into bunk beds at some stage too but had assumed that bunk beds are for much older kids, i.e. 5 plus. Everytime I see them in catalogues like GLTC they say that bunk beds are not recommended for under 5's ??

monkeyfacegrace - could I please have the details of those custom made beds too, they sound brill and so cheap!

the shorty beds from Argos sound good too, will look into them as well.

TeeBee · 30/06/2010 16:46

Don't see why it should be a problem. Mine do, despite having different rooms and beds, but choose to share the double bed in the play room. Never even questioned it to be honest.

monkeyfacegrace · 30/06/2010 18:47

Its a lovely guy called Ian. His number is 01202 511030, or send him an email at [email protected]
The website is www.pine-design.co.uk
And you want to order the Winton bunk, but ask him to make it fit a mattress size 160cm x 70cm. (Tell him identical to R.MacPherson's order a few weeks ago)
The beds are beautiful-so much better than the pics, but order the Winton as its best suited to little uns as the bottom bunk is so low!!
Then trot on over to Ikea and buy the mattresses for £39 each.
Done, bunks that will last them until they are 8ish!!
Let me know if anyone orders some (nosey emoticon!)
