When do babies start to understand 'no'?

8mo DS has developed an annoying habit of pulling his bib over his head at mealtimes! I replace it and say 'no' - just wondered if he understand what I'm going on about?

ds is 9 months and i think he does respond to 'nooooo' although more tone of voice than the actual word.

however, i save for things like touching the fireplace rather than grabbing the spoon so it 'stands out' more when i say it iykwim.

distraction for bib pulling probably more effective.

i think he understands: daddy, ds1's name, his own name and cats (he has on mobile in his room). as when i say these words he looks to the person/thing in question.

i think 'no' at this stage is kind of distracting them with your tone more than anything.

its the right age now as they may not understand no at the mo but once till they understand what it does mean, they will think "Ahh, so thats what it means!"

youre doing well and my dd2 used to pull off her bib everytime i tried to feed her till i gave her the spoon and she fed herself! (she is a very holding her spoon) where dd1 wanted me to feed her till she was abit older.

ans she never pulled her bib off from that day she held the spoon, she is now 21m old

At about 18 or 19

From about 7 months - doesn't mean they obey it though! Tone of voice/expression of face is important too.
I save NO for things that are actually dangerous, rather than annoying, otherwise you find yourself saying it all day! We stopped bothering with bibs as she hated them - she hasn't worn one since about 9 months.

IMoveTheStars · 27/06/2010 18:18

What Octavia said - save no for the important things, or you'll be saying it all day and it'll have no effect at all

In this weather just strip her off! No need for clothes anyway, so why bother with a big
