What books does your 2 year old like?

It's DS' birthday next month and we want to get him some new books but are not sure what to go for.
He loves Dear Zoo, Tiger Who Came to Tea, Hungry Caterpillar, and we have got Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, Wind in the Willows etc which we read to him.

A lot of what I can find that is recommended for his age seems to be related to TV programs, it's all Peppa, or Night Garden, or Charlie and Lola and I don't really want to go down the road where he will only read books where he recognises the characters from the telly.

Any ideas much appreciated!

Hairy McClary books are a big hit round our way (DD just turned 2yo is very fond of dogs).

A book she's loved for a while now, but still enjoys is "Can you see a little bear?".

"The bear in a cave"/"We're going on a bear hunt" are popular too.

She likes the Big Bear Little Bear series too.

Can you see an (animal) pattern emerging here?

If he likes the Tiger book, perhaps other Judith Kerr - One Night in the Zoo? Mog? DD loves those.

HTH.

Dd2 is three she loves a book called 'Into the Castle'. It's about a monster that lives in a castle.

She also likes one about all the white elephants and black elephants killing each other because they are different I can't remember the name of that one. It's not very nice, anyway.

And The Grumpalump.

MrsJohnDeere · 18/06/2010 10:27

Dig, Dig, Digging.
Mog (excl. death one)
Goodnight Moon
Peepo
The younger Paddington books with lots of pictures
Winnie the Witch
Any of the Kipper or Wibbly Pig books (Kipper's A to Z and Kipper's Year are the best imo)
Hippos go berserk

yep Bear Hunt (lots of oh no's) and Hungry Caterpillar, Peepo, The Cat in The Hat as well - basically anything with strong rhymes and good pictures.

sheeplikessleep · 18/06/2010 10:52

The Gruffalo
Calm Down Boris
Tom and Pippo books
There's a rumble in the jungle
(+ a lot of Thomas books!)

omnishambles · 18/06/2010 10:54

My 2 year old also likes those scary sid type books with the hand puppet on the front.

NorkyButNice · 18/06/2010 10:57

Aliens in Underpants
The Gruffalo (and all their other rhyming books)
Hungry Caterpillar
Nursery rhyme book

Lots of others but I can't think right now!

Oh please buy "Little rabbit Foofoo"
www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Rabbit-Foo-Michael-Rosen/dp/0744598001/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=127685 6394&sr=8-3 it comes with DVD or without. These are all lovely, thank you! I am looking on the Book People website and there are loads including a full set of Thomas books!

DS really loves those books with buttons that make a sound but we have very few of those!

He also likes the Apple Tree Farm stories

here

So do I actually, they are fairly quick to read and nice and gentle, making them good bedtime stories.

Deanna1977 · 18/06/2010 12:39

My DS loves -
Funny Bones series - he adores skeletons!
Julia Donaldson (any)
Aliens loves underpants
Hairy McClairy & Slinky Malinky books

In fact he loves most books he can get his hands on! The library is very well used in this house!

KnottyLocks · 18/06/2010 12:47

My DSs absolutely love 'Pants' here. It has a wonderful rhythm to it and they really enjoy chanting along. There's a second book about pants too called 'More Pants' which is also very funny.

I'm not generally so keen on the Book People sets cause then you end up with a big set of books they may not especially enjoy (or I might get bored to tears reading). Prefer a bit more variety.

Agree with Judith Kerr's Mog books
Each Peach Pear Plum
Maisy
Wibbly Pig
Spot
We're going on a Bear Hunt
Shoe Baby
Sarah Garland books, Doing the garden, Going swimming etc. I particularly like these and they can be read to quite little children or older ones as the words are simple but the pictures have a lot of detail.

DDs current favorite is Who's a Cheeky Baby by Ian Whybrow, DS still quite enjoys this as well

sparkle1977 · 18/06/2010 13:15

Another vote here for Dig, Dig, Digging by Mayo & Ayliffe (I think) - by far the favourite book in our household.

Thomas the Tank books
Wibbly Pig books
Gruffalo and the others by the same authors
The Little Red Train series of books are also great, especially the detailed pictures.
Apple Tree Farm stories with Rusty the dog etc.

Thomas are so very dull to read though - is it only me who thinks that?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 18/06/2010 14:30

omni - we really like Thomas in this house DH is a train nut and DS shows every sign of following him!

BornToFolk - I didn't know Apple Tree Farm were a series! We have Curly the Pig, passed down from SIL, and DS loves it. It is bedtime favourite number one. I am delighted to know we might be able to achieve some variation!

Oliver Jeffers. We love way back home.

Julia Donaldson has lovely rhyming text.

Troublesome Trolls has nice touchy bits and stinky ending, but can't remember who it's by. Also hard to rip up.

I find 'character' TV tie in books to be generally boring and rubbish. They seem like they are written in 2 minutes and drive me nuts.

Debbie Gliori 'no matter what' made me cry. Love it.

BornToFolk · 18/06/2010 14:44

You'll only get variation if your DS lets you! There are some stories in that book that we've only read once or twice but others I know word for word because I've read them so often.

bluebump · 18/06/2010 14:48

My DS loves The Baby Catalogue by Janet & Allan Ahlberg whose books I used to have when I was younger. It's the only thing he will sit down and read before bed every night.
