MRI scan

My DS 20 month is booked in for an MRI scan at the end of this month to hopefully confirm Torticollis.
The thing is I am stressing about not being about to give him any food for 6 hours before and no fluids 2 hours before. They have said it will most likely be a morning appointment, so to starve him after midnight and then no fluids after 6am. I am dreading it, how can I explain to a 20 month old it's for his own good?
And then there?s the fact that I will see him be put out for the scan, it is going to be horrendous, I know it's for his own good, but I am really getting upset about it all. Can anyone give me advice or tell me any about any experiences that might help me.

My DS had an op to bring his undescended testical down at 14 mnths and DD had gromit op at 21 mnths. I womt lie, the no food/juice thing is not pleasant and the being put out for anaesthetic is, well, horrible. However, you will cope with it because you have to. Neither of the wards my DC was on allowed food until all the children had stopped being nil by mouth, so that did make it easier.

Will you be able to go with him to the MRI, or are you likely to have to wait on the ward. Do you have someone to go with you? I did, both times, and think that did make a little bit easier. I was there for DC, and my mum/sister was there for me.

Sorry to not be more comforting, I remember getting very wound up both times, and am already getting stressed as DS has got to have adenoidectomy, even though I dont know when yet! But I have surprised myself each time by being ok,stronger than I thought I suppose.

They had lots of toys on the ward DD was on which really helped. She ended up not being able to eat until 630 when her scan was supposed to be at 1..they got held up..but didn't ask for food until just before it.

It is hard when you see them go under the anaesthetic/sedation but you will get through it and it will be over quickly.

Its not horrendous and your ds will have a paeds anaesthetist for the whole time he is down in MRI.
You should be allowed to stay with him until he drifts off but then you will be asked to leave whilst they intubate etc.
There will probably be a member of staff from the ward with you and they will escort you out and possibly back to the ward.
You can ask to be called as soon as he wakes up so that you are there to sooth him (children in recovery without parents are hard work all they want is mummy or daddy).

Thank you all so much, at least I can feel a little more prepared for the day now. My DH is going to be with me, we have both booked 2 days off, as I know when I had an anaesthetic they advice supervision for 24 hours after.
I know many have been through much worse with their babies, it?s just that it took 3 years of fertility treatment to get our beautiful DS and I am trying my hardest not to be overprotective
