HV not measuring height?

DS hasn't been measured since birth (he's 7.5mo)

I just wondered if other people's HVs measure the LOs at weight checks?

DS is on the 25% for weight but DH and I are both biiig and tall so I'm curious about him being little...

DD has only been measured for height once by the HV and that was at her 2yr check.

HTH

DS was only measured once, when he was nearly a year old. Even that was only because the community children's nurse came out, rather than the HV.

I'm not that fussed, but it was quite interesting to find out that he was above average for height, despite being well below average for weight. Since then he's filled out a lot though!

they dont do it as standard cos aparently its not "accurate" (so i was told..)
but if your dc is very high on the percentiles, or maybe very low too, they might do hight to check they are in proportion, so i did get it done once for ds1 as they were saying he's too big, but when they see height on the same percentile they back off. i think 25th line is kind of "normal" not massively under or overweight so they prob wont bother with it. you could always ask just incase they agree to do it, or do it yourself @ home.

It's notoriously difficult to measure an infant's height accurately, which is why they don't bother.

DDs height was only measured once shortly after she was born......she's 2.3 now.

My ds is 5 months old. I always asked for a height measurement at weigh-in and my HV would do it for me -- no mention of accuracy problems in terms of difficulty in getting the height measurement.

Then in my latest visit she told me that normally they check height at birth, 9 months, 1 year etc. She said the reason for this is that height is gained in spurts versus weight which is gained gradually. Therefore checking height at more frequent intervals was not very fruitful as the results are kind of misleading -- you might think you have a shorty-pants and then two weeks later they might be super tall.

Hope that makes sense. It made sense when my HV explained it in her words!

nigglewiggle · 11/06/2010 21:10

Just measure the height of the snot on your skirt

WoollyBully · 11/06/2010 21:11

My HV told me that boys tend to grow as you describe - in spurts. But girls grow gradually. Probably bollocks.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 11/06/2010 21:12

Get him done at two and double his height - that will be his adult height!!

Karoleann · 11/06/2010 22:54

Nope nothing for both of mine and no checks either. They did call me when Ds1 had measles to chastise me for not getting MMR (he'd had it 6 months earlier!). HV would be the first to go in our post budget cull!

AngelDog · 12/06/2010 08:32

I asked my HV to measure DS at about 3/4 months as I wanted to buy a swaddle blanket which was te right size. The HV said they didn't measure length after birth. She said they monitor weight because if there are concerns with that, they can give advice on feeding, but if there are concerns about height, there's nothing thatcan be done.

We used a tape measure to get a rough idea of DS's length.

I do think it's a bit pointless to measure weight but not height, because looking at a baby's weight is only meaningful when compared with their height. So you would be worried about a baby who was 2nd centile for weight if they were 95th centile for height, but not if they were 2nd centile for height IYSWIM.
