Potty Training

Hi, just wondering when other mums started potty training. I'm not in any rush as DD is only 11.5 months. MIL asks everytime she sees me "Have you got her on the potty yet?", although she started asking that when DD was 4 months old so I don't take her very seriously anymore.

Anyway, just curious. I know it's different for everyone but just wondering what the average age is to start potty training.

Thanks.

I think there are lots of steps towards potty training .... these were mine -

Always accompanied me to the bathroom so knew what was going on right from the start.

Showed him a board book about using the potty from around 18 months.

Bought a couple of potties and left them lying around from around 18 months.

Waited until he could tell me he was having a wee/poo - around 2.3 months

Let him wander around in the mornings without a nappy on and encouraged to sit on the potty for a wee around 2.3 - 2.4 months

2.4 months was virtually accident free after letting him go 'commando' (no undies - wearing them under his trousers led to more accidents)

He wouldnt poo on the potty until 2.5 months - always asked for a nappy on ..... I then offered small rewards if he did a poo on the potty and by 2.6 he was fully potty trained.

At 2.7 he is now starting to stand up infront of the toilet for a wee but as he is short in height he refuses to sit on it!

This is how its happened for us - the age at which a child adapts will vary enormously but good communication will be a massive help.

Good luck

We are toilet training our 3.3 year old dd. We tried several times when she was in her twos, and introduced the concept to her at 15 months old but all failed and she had to go back into nappies. Tried again at 3.1 years with the view to not going back to nappies and she is doing really well. DD is older, is able to control her bladder better, and understands it much better than when she was younger so its been much easier. She now knows when she needs to go and tells me or goes to the toilet for me to follow and help her (she cannot yet take her pants or trouser up and down so needs help). Is dry virtually all day. They say wait until they are ready and it does help if they are older.

Thank you everyone. It seems to be that they are better when they are older and it is easier for all involved. I guess I'll just have to put up with MIL questioning me for at least another year!

I dont think its recommended to start before 18 months as they physically not normally ready for it before then at the earliest...
Just ignore the mil and do it when you want to, wen you feel your dd is ready
even 18 months i dont think they all are ready its pretty early, or even at 2yrs!
