Hi. My little girl who's 4 has started clearing her throat all the time when talking. It seems to have turned into a habit since she had a bit of a cough a while ago. She's a fantastic talker normally - a bit too much at times! It's often when she's trying to think of her next word but sometimes it'sa bit like a tick that she can't stop. Anyone any ideas on how I can help her stop?

Ignore it or it will become an issue

Its just a habit and you need to ignore it.

My ds2 had a terrible habit of raising his eyebrows and holding his mouth taut he really did look very odd the more we commented the worse he got -then we just accepted it was 'his' habit and as quick as it started it stopped.

You could mention she has a tickly throat and perhaps some medicine might stop it ....and give her a minty tic tac ....

Thanks. Have been trying to ignore it. Will persevere!!

mine did this for a while (when she was four)and so did her four year old friend, they both stopped after a while, maybe its a four thing!

DD was doing something similar with eye blinking and the more peope commented, the more she did it. As soon as we ignored it, it stopped.

Hi. If it continues, and its like you describe-as if she cant stop it-then I would consider the possibility of it being a tic. If it develops into another "tic" ie nose twitching, get her checked out at GPs.
My friends daughter started with nose twitching, which led onto vocal tics and has now been dx with Tourets,(sp).
It could be nothing, but just keep an (unobtrusive) eye on it.

When my DD was 4 she did something quite similar for about 6 months, she said hmmmmm, hmmmmm, hmmmmm all the time in between words and even when she was sitting silently listening to me reading or something. It drove me utterly mad but with iron will I managed to ignore it (eventually - initially I asked her to stop it, which of course made it much worse). Somewhere along the line it disappeared. I don't remember when it stopped but it must have been a few months ago (she's 5 now)
