Banging head

Why does my toddler get so frustrated she starts to bang her head against the wall,cot or floor?Shes got a lump on her forehead now but wont stop.Shes 18 months old,she does it not only when shes crying but having fun too? What can I do?

I think this is not uncommon at her age. Can be a source of comfort- sort of rhythmic and rocking, or an expression of frustration, or sometimes distraction from pain if they're teething or under the weather or perhaps all of the above! The usual advice is to try and take it in your stride and not give it too much attention as it can become even more ingrained if, on top of any other reasons, the child starts to perceive that it's a sure fire way to get immediate and full parental attention.

My ds3 does this all the time...especially if he wakes up at night.
