Holding dummy shield inside bottom lip

DD 16 months has a dummy, she uses it mostly for bedtime, or if she is teething. The last week or so she has been holding the bottom of the dummy shield in her bottom lip. Kind of looks like she is jutting her bottom jaw out. When I say, ''put your dodie in properly!'' she slips her bottom lip back behind the dummy shield, and sucks normally for a bit, then within a few minutes, the shield is inside the bottom lip gain.

Any experience/advice?

Time to take the dummy away then

I tried! She freaked out and will not sleep without it.

Am worried in case it is a sign of something else? Sounds wierd I know, but only other time I have seen a child do it was a child with Beckwith-Wieddeman Syndrome, and macrosomia (large tongue), now DD has started to do it, I think I might be freaking over nothing

Scurry - What age do you think is best to take the dum away? Left it til DS was 2.9ish, then let him have it at night til he was about 3.

My children still have summies at bedtime and they are 6 so I am clearly a long way from being an expert in this field BUT i can say that they both used to do this on and off for no obvious reason - and then gradually stopped doing it. I just ignored it on the whole.

Kick - Thanks, am so relieved that someone else has experience of it. A silly thing to worry about, when I should really be thanful DC's are healthy etc, but it has really bothered me!!

I would try to just let her have it at night from now on and perhaps try some other diversion, source of comfort during the day. I don't think it matters that much and it will be according to the child's needs but I would worry about teeth if she is pulling in part of the dummy....good luck they are bloomin difficult to get rid of!

Mine all did that and I did then take the dummies away. They were bout two though...and managed without them fine.

beesonmummyshead · 06/06/2010 21:02

mine does this sometimes, she is 2.9 and only has dummies at nap/bedtime - though at 16 months she still had her dummy in the day as well, and probably did it. Not something I've ever thought about tbh

Thanky you Scurry, allbie, bees and Kick

Think she is a little young for me to take the dummy away, though I might now reserve it JUST for bedtime, and get her some more teethers for during the daytime, if she gets fussy.

Relieved that other children have done the wierd lip thing too!

Thanks again
