Hi. I've just got off the phone from my sister after she's been to visit a friend of hers, she was really worried about said friend's baby girl.

She's 10months old and isn't crawling, rolling or any other method of getting around. She just lays there and wiggles around, she isn't even sitting up. She said she's infront of the TV all day watching CBeebies and is still on 6 bottles of formula a day. Is this normal?

I hope that I haven't offended anyone if this is similar to their child, I only have my own son to go by and he was early with these stages so I have no idea if it's something to worry about or not? (clearly the tv thing is wrong, don't need advice on that, just thought it might be a reason for her inactivity?)

I am concerned that she does not sit up yet. Most babies sit by 6 months. I would definitely suggest that your sister tells her friend she needs to see her GP and get a referral to a paediatrician.

It is very unlikely to be TV related, and I think it would just be inflammatory to mention this, as it may sound like a criticism (which it is) and deflect from the real issue, which is trying to offer concern and support.

Hope that helps.

Not sitting up by 10 months sounds concerning.

And the formula thing goes along with the developmental stuff, I guess. If she's not sitting up, she's not ready for solids.

Dont see what CBeebies has to do with it, though, unless your sister is actually worried that the child is failure to thrive because of neglect and lack of stimulation? is that what you're getting at?

Yes tortoise that's what I meant, sorry it wasn't clear was just an after thought really that she might not have any 'motivation' to move around if she's just watching TV all day. But, Jay, you're right it wouldn't help to mention this (unless any physical reasons had been ruled out)and I wouldn't dream of doing so. Like I said, was an after thought. Esepecially as I don't know for certain just how long she's sat in front of the TV.

Thanks very much for your opinions, you've echoed ours. I'm going to call my sister after work to get her to suggest to her friend that they take a trip to the GP as a starting point.

Good plan. I hope it is OK
