Not crawling at 11 months - should I worry?

Hello there

I realise I'm probably being an over-anxious first time mother, but bear with me.

DS is nearly 11 months, but isn't crawling. He gets around by rolling, then spinning himself round to face whatever he wants, but he's only really started doing that in the past month or so.

He sat very early - before six months - and has been quite content just playing in one place. He seems quite on track with other skills: he's very dextrous, drinks unaided, and can understand a few instructions, but it's just his physical development I'm worried about.

He never liked being on his tummy or on his back, so didn't get much practice when he was younger. He's also pretty heavy - I'm wondering if that's a factor?

I saw the health visitor yesterday, and the fact that she had an opinion - see the GP if he doesn't start doing it in a couple of weeks - has made me worry! Also, he is blind in one eye with a condition that in a few rare instances can be linked with developmental delay.

Am I being PFB? Tell me tales of other late crawlers who are now in the Olympic team.

dd2 never ever crawled, didn't roll over either and didn't walk till 17 months - dd1 crawled at 7 months and walked at 12 months- they are all different and don't worry

Hello,
My dd never crawled and she is now 2, our nursery began to worry when she was about 14 months, she never rolled over or anything and of course you always feel as though you are under pressure because other babies are crawling/walking etc............Well low and behold @ 16/17 months she was walking, some babies just don't want to crawl and my dd was very happy to have all the other children bringing everything to her!!!!! Once you baby can stand, let him stand alone for a while holding onto a bar/rail or something a couple of times a day and before you know it he will be off!!!!!!

its so great to take comfort in all these messages, why oh why do we compare and get anxious..I like you thought I wouldn't compare but find myself worrying, I was with a mum and little girl same age as my little boy today - 1 year, it was interesting for us both to healthily 'compare' and see that each baby had its own skills, mine amazing at moving around soft play circuit, hers not interested at all, hers saying a word or two, mine not, mine drinking loads of milk from own beaker, hers not, hers almost walking, mine not, mine crawling, hers not and so on and so on....they will get there in their own time, and if by 3 they don't then get moving on checks etc, don't worry the beautiful precious time away...they are just perfect the way they are.

I'm glad to see this thread as my dd of 10 and a half months is still showing no interest in crawling at all. In common with many of the late crawlers mentioned on this thread she always hated lying and sat unaided from 5 months.

For me, her not crawling has not been a worry at all.. however it is annoying . The reason for this is that she isn't happy just sitting- she is strong on her feet and just wants to walk about all day, but can only do so when holding my hands. So this is what I spend my days doing! So I am looking forward to her being able to get about on her own, be it crawling, walking, bum-shuffling or any other way she might find! I hope I don't have to wait too much beyond a year for this.

Neither of my girls crawled til they were over 10 months but were both walking at 13 months.

DS2 is 13 months old and still doesn't roll or crawl or in fact pull himself up!

He has however started to cruise in the past month or so which has been amazing to watch.

I think he'll walk in the next few weeks but the crawling just isn't happening. He hates being on his front even now.

My useless HV wanted us to see a physiotherapist when he was 10 months old as he wasn't crawling despite me telling HER that crawling wasn't a developmental indicator and I wasn't in the slightest bit worried. Needless to say I cancelled the appointment as soon as she'd left my house.
