after watching 'child of our time' im convinced ds may have ADHD. He's currently seeing a speech and language therapist and has been diganosed with s and l delay. However some of the things she is suggesting doesn't seem right to me as i know he is capable of things but is extremely strong willed and if he isnt interested he will not follow instructions. He can be very hyper but can sit still if needed in school but has huge problems concentrating on tasks especially if he isn't interested. So do i speak to the school, hv or doctor?

How old is your ds ? My 7yo has a dx of ADHD, am interested about the programme you saw ... have watched it but didn't pick up on any ADHD stuff ... maybe I went to the loo and missed it

Usually a Child Psychiatrist that diagnoses, although a Paed could diagnose, too (basically, anyone who is a medical doctor can diagnose in theory).

In our area a Paed can diagnose verbally, but will always refer on to a Psychiatrist for a proper assessment.

There is a test (argghh, trying to remember the name - Conner Test????) which was given to us as a family, and to dd's school to be filled in. Dx was given by a Paediatric Consultant who already knew dd1. I went straight to her as we already knew her.

Perhaps ask school to refer to Ed Psych?

Talk to the school unless you have good reason to believe they may be obstructive.

If so, go to the doctor and do w2hat elvislives says.

Depends on area - in ours it is health visitor/school doctor that sets things in motion rather than GP. The school doc has readier access to all the testing than us (a mere, humble GP!!)

There was a young boy who had low attention levels and was unable to focus on tasks for long periods. As a result he was falling behind school etc. Our ds is 5 and is the same and will only focus on things he is interested in-if not he will switch off. Im not 100% sure he has ADHD but because of waiting lists in our areas id rather put his name down now then wait till he is 7.When i looked online about the different types of ADHD he seem to fall in the inattentive category.

At 5 it's very common to have concentration and attention issues. To get a dx of ADHD it has to be affecting their lives not only at school but socially as well ... concentration is not the only problem area for a child with ADHD.
