He doesn't seem to hear 'th' at all.

Okay - I'll let it lie then! Ds1 had speech therapy so this was picked on when he was this age, but Ds2, whose speech has developed fairly averagely, does this now.

It's probably worth doing something - can't harm anyway!!

I found this site great when I realised that it wasn't great that my 6 year old was prounching his Ds as Gs

I've had problems with my laptop so have lost loads of bookmarks - one was a chart outlining when it should be a concern that certain sounds aren't pronouced correctly

buddleja, I could have done with that site 3 years ago! Thank you!

My 6yo can't say the th sound either, drives me nuts! Also adds an S onto words starting with Hu such as Shuman and Shuge, it's like he just can't say the words without adding the S. Also says wum instaed of one.

I don't this is the one you had Buddleja, but it's quite good (the one you had was probably the one than a MNer who was a SALT always linked to; was fab). Both kinds of 'th' should be there by 5-7, so 4 doesn't look like a problem. They are INCREDIBLY close together, it can be fun to figure out the way you actually form the sounds, and get your child to very consciously put their teeth, tongue and lips in the right position to make a sound. It's impossible to say 'f' with your top teeth on your tongue, for instance, it'll come out as 'th' however hard you try to say 'f'!

Stripey, I'd quite forgotten but reading that has reminded me my brother would have said 'phuman' and 'phuge' at that sort of age! Admittedly, he did end up having speech therapy, but he had more problems than just that (he'd only been speaking intelligibly for a year at 6, for starters).

StripeyMoon · 01/06/2010 13:32

Dontcallmebaby it's bizarre, he actually has very clear speech and is quite bright - other than these things
